hi all, im a newbie here and to atving, just purchased a new can-am 500 max xt. Nice machine but sucks in snow??? In all your honest opinions is it better to buy tracks for 4k or buy a used sled for about 2k. I know i would not get the speed or gas milage with the atv and thats not a problem as i already own it and insure it and im not into racing, just would like to get out fishing??? Which is better in deep powder the sled or atv??? Thanks all, im new here and am enjoying this forum. Rayc

Welcome Ray,

If you like your quad and just want to add to it, go for some tracks. They offer better floatation and terrainablility then a sled. They just suck back the gas and are alot slower then a sled. But man are they ever fun.

Hey welcome, my opionion, go for the tracks. My dad had two sleds that he sold and bought a set of tracks for his quad and has never looked back once. He does alot of ice fishing and I think they are hands down better in the deep stuff for pulling a sled full of gear then a sled. Plus you have the benifet of one insurence.

The down side to tracks is increased wear on things like bearings, but that's pretty minor. The apache tracks from BRP are supposed to be awesome. If you've got the $$, go for tracks.

Tracks will go where sleds can't but when you do get stuck and you will get stuck?

Bring a shovel ...... a big one! LOL

Just put a pair of commander tracks on my 2005 Foreman 500 es and they are fantastic. I am selling both my sled's as I am tired of having the money tied up when you can only use them for 3 months a year. Might have to buy a second quad from the prcoeeds with tracks of course

You dont get stuck with tracks EVER if you are carefull, you can get stuck easy if your always on the throttle. But yes, tracks kick butt, the newer style like the Apache turn easier and are lighter and faster than the older tracks. Oh and I classify stuck as being not being able to get out under your own power or if you have to shovel, if you can still move and are able to get out you weren't stuck, lol.

Nope I had to shovel for about 1/2 hour and get winched back about 15 ft.

Infact I was along a roadway and I talked to a guy later that night that saw us and he thought I was on tires because I was soo stuck you couldn't tell and it was unbelievable how deep it was. Probably 8 to 10 ft to the ground.

Broke through about an 8 inch crust and didn't come back up for air???

I didn't take pictures but I should have....

Never say never especially if you are alone! LOL it sure was fun though and my buddy with tracks on his Griz was with me so I knew I would be OK.

Sleds have their place too, your not getting anywhere fast with tracks on a quad. This winter I have 2000miles on my sled and about 300 on the quad. I love both especially with a 4 stroke sled. Reliability, fuel ecconomy, power, distance between fuel stops. This sled is absolutely the best and most fun sled I have ever ever had. Period!

The quad is fun but mostly for goofin around, pulling the kids, taking the kids for rides and lately haulin wood. Man these tracks pull and work.

I'd say if you really like getting way the hell out there in winter = Sled

If you just want to get to your fishing hole and can drive your truck within 5 miles of it then go quad but your quad better be automatic. I hear tracks on shifter quads kind of suck?

ya ya ya..."I had the camera but didn't think about pictures". Likely story! rofl I know a couple of Cat riders that never take pictures when they're stuck, just everyone else. <ducking behind monitor>

Those bullrushes were a b*tch... even with sleds, I know that one from personal experience. At least now we know what will get tracks stuck, huh?

So you had to walk home to get the quad to pull out your sled, huh? ;) I had my cell on...

Only if you gotta shift with your foot!! The Honda's with ES actually work quite well.

Bullrushes, LOL. That didn't stop me last year, of course I hit that big giant bullrush on the red river at full speed and almost never made it out. I like playing in the bullrushes, its a fun challenge. QZ is still a newbie on the kawi and on the tracks, give him another year and he wont be getting stuck much.

Yes I agree with you there, I don't actually think of the Honda ES as a manual trans, it is so easy to bang gears.

Newbie eh BB? LOL not new to tracks or quads, I was just pushing the limit.
If you ain't been stuck then you ain't pushing it hard enough.

I was actually blasting drifts and bullrushes like crazy and was getting a little tired and on the last 100+ yds before the end, I got sucked in to a deep one. I backed off the front left popped up and I was able to drive out but only to drop into another deep drift and punch through the top crust and soon hung up and stuck up to the top of the fenders.

It sure was fun, nothing got damaged and after a good dig and a hard pull backwards, I drove right back in and out on my own?

Tracks are amazing what they will go through, climb, and float across but if and when you do get stuck, it ain't so simple getting out?

Remember I said Kawi, not quads. He still doesn't know how to manage the kawi power yet.

All I need is some Muzzy now? then I will be in my Glory! I love the sound of that pipe. How can you not love it. I think it even sounds better than my Harley with a Thunder header?
