Parts cleaner or gunwash then spray some brake cleaner on to get any residue off. At least thats what I do.

I heard brake cleaner leaves the sheaves pouris, meaning now perfectly smooth. My dealer said not to use the stuff, just soap and water, thats what I use, on a spunge and use some elbow grease. Removing the clutches or just the belt will help alot.

After your done cleaning them take a piece of fine sand paper or emery cloth or steel wool and buff the faces of your clutch with it. Puts some fine scratches in the faces to eliminate belt slippage. Doesn't matter how you do it (circular/straight up and down) just so long as you rough the surface a bit. I've heard the term belt glazing maybe thats what you're trying to avoid. Don't know.

Glazing is when the belt slips so bad it makes the sheaves so smooth that the belt has nothing to grip onto.

I think I'll use some parts cleaner from work. That should do the trick. Don't think I'll pull the clutches out , just take off the belt and see how that goes.

Just use soap & water. The soap removes most everything and leaves no residue. If your gonna use anything to roughen the surfaces of the clutches use a fine steel wool or something that won't leave gouges in the clutch surfaces.
