Just recently, my winch has begun to act up. When I first go to use it, it will wind in but won't wind out. Seems to be directly related to temperature. Anyone had this problem before? Am I dealing with a switch that's about to fail, a relay , or the inner workings of the winch itself?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah Vinnie, it's the 2500 and no I haven't serviced it yet...(bigbear bad)The last time it wouldn't work, I applied a little heat (via a heat gun) to the switch and it got it working right away. So it would seem to me that when the switch is cold, it won't work the one way. It's a sealed unit, so tearing it open will most likely pooch it. I'm thinking of replacing the switch entirely. This would involve the switch and the harness to the relay at the back of the quad. I haven't priced one out yet but I hear they can be quite expensive. Mine is small and mounts to the handle bar.

Big bear, you'll find the problem explained in this thread (http://www.trackshare.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9144) This is not as uncommon as one might think. I have the same problem on occasion, just haven't fixed it yet. This has not got anything to do with the 8 post contactor recall. The problem is happening within the 4 post contactor.
Same thing happened to my winch, opened up solenoid and found 2 small wires broken off from small circuit board..Soldered them back up and no problem since then.
ok, renegade is right. There is a wire inside the solenoid that has come disconnected. This would explain why it worked once in a while and not others. You can see that it would make connection and disconnect if it got jiggled around. It is such a small wire though, not sure how I can solder it.
I used a very fine tipped butane powered soldering iron with silver solder as vinnie stated. Did this about 6 months ago , and have used the winch a lot since then and have had no problems. Good luck.

You can take apart the switch. After opened there should be a silver clamp that holds that rubber suround on the switch, just becareful not to break it (broke mine and had to use electrical tape to keep it tightly closed) once off just roll the rubber up. Not much inside there only a silver contact piece (it's like a teeter taughter make sure its clean and the two contacts are clean.
