I just bought a 150 cc quad for my daughter. She's 8 years old, over 4 feet tall and very good at throttling my 500 HO.Now the throttle has a governer on it and i adjusted it so that it goes really slow. The machine is light enough for her to control. She'll "ALWAYS" wear a helmet on it.I'm seperated from my wife and she raised hell that my daughter was too young to drive it.I tend to disagree, now what do you guys/gals think?

That is not too young as long as she is well supervised. I think that it is just something else to complain about.

All depends on the kids and there level of responsibility and maturity IMO. My Boy is ten and wants one too. He is a good driver on my 500 and drives really nice but as soon as he thinks i can't see him on the other side of the house i knotice he get on the gas a bit much and the longer he drives it around the yard he starts getting a little braver. So even with a lower cc machine i can still see him doing stuff he shouldn't and get himself into situations he shouldn't be in .. so there for i will not get him one yet. He tends to get carried away with most things he does.. a do it then think about it later when it too late if you know what i mean.

Hi there,
I'm new here at trackshare. Last fall, I just got a little 70cc quad for my daughter who is also eight years old. We just moved out of Winnipeg and it seemed almost mandatory to get a couple ATVs. I never drove one myself except a honda trike a few times until just this last fall when I got a 150 for myself to try it out and the 70 for for my daughter.
Anyway, she is very responsible and has been following all my directions. I put the throttle limiter on as well and that does ease my mind a little. Just make sure she understands all the rules and she will be fine. With my daughter, she must wear a helmet, goggles, gloves and jeans. I think I might get a chest protector as well. She is only allowed to ride with me, of course. The most important thing is for her to know how to brake well and if there is a kill switch that's important to show her.
If your daughter is responsible, she will be fine. However, you will have to convince her mom that she is ready. lol.

i started riding bikes when i was 8. rode a trike since i was way younger...not sure on the age though. no trottle limiter either :humbs:
it all depends on the kid. some kids can handle it no problem, others not so well. there a few really young kids that ride 65 cc 2 stroke bikes at the gimli track, and they're really good. it all depends.

i got my first quad when i was 9 years old (250)

Sounds like her safety is your primary concern here so I don't see a problem.
Teach her how to handle the machine properly and enjoy your time together with a new sport. Once she is more experienced, why not a father daughter ride through some trails somewhere ?
As soon as I get my next bike, the first ride will probably be one with my boys , the eldest one is already calling dibs on the Honda..

My daughter is turning 4 and she has a 50 predator I got it befor winter and rode on the back with her to learn the brake and throttle. after the snow came I plwowed trails on the yard with the blade and let her drive around can't get out and she does very well. She always has a helmet on and she rides only with supervision. as long as it is monitored I think it is fine.

A cousin of mine is I think 4 or 5. He has a small one he can ride with us. The bike has like a remote killswitch and proximity kill too. So 8 years old is not young enough.

Congrats bud, your daughter will enjoy it very much.As for being to young, it all depends how mature a child is. Some mature faster than others. It all comes down to adult supervision. My kids started at 4 and 5 years old, they were always supervised by and adult. And they always wear a helmut.Hope to go riding with you and your daughter soon.

I know for a fact that speed is fun. Not long ago( perhaps 3 years ago) was the first time i rode a quad, and i had a blast. At first i was shy but the more you ride its obvious that you'll get braver. What im saying is explain the rules and responsibilities of riding

well , just tell your wife that "househunter" just got the little 90 cc polaris (pink) for his daughter....and she's only 2 1/2 , it's a "i'm going on the potty" present.
Of course she'll ride around the yard this summer with mommy on the back, and by fall she'll be able to keep up with gibbie !!!

We need to start them right out of the womb! Give birth on the seat and baptize them in the mud! LOL.

I was driving my dads three wheeler at that age. He taught me the ropes until i was confident driving it myself. I remember i had reach down and shift with my hand because i couldnt pull up on the shifter with my foot. But like all kids even adults with a new toy to play with, the more i rode it the more brave i would become. The rule was no going over 3rd gear. Well to me that just ment no going over 3rd gear when mom and dad were in sight. i got my licks too. i've rolled, i've tumbled, i've put a stick through my lip and i even hit my uncles parked truck. just like anything you learn as you go. i'd say let her ride. I personally don't feel its too young as long as your watching.

AMEN! Brotha! LOL
All joking asside, I agree that along with rules and safety gear supervision and dicipline are the most important. If they do start to over step their control then you step in, if the are doing something wrong, dangerous etc. If supervised I think our children can learn to ride and respect these machines with a more than reasonable probability that they will be safe.
I bought my daughter a 50 scrambler when she was 2? LOL yeah maybe a little over zealous of me but now my wife rides around the yard on it with both my girls. When they are ready I will show them how to ride but for now they mostly ride with me on my machine but they watch and learn fast. My oldest is 4 now and she knows where the go go juice is, thats for sure.
When I had my Polaris she would ride in front, she liked that. But on more than one occasion she would grab the trottle and pin it! I would just grab the Brake and nothing serious would happen.
Anyway as soon as I got my Brute I put my cargo seat on. She will never ride in front of me on that beast!!! If she were to try the old "grab the throttle" trick on the Brute we would be ass over tea kettle in no time brakes or no brakes!
It would not be good! She could definately get hurt that way so she will never ride in front or pilot that bike by her self or with me on the back or anything. That bike is too Brutal! LOL No more riding in front....
I think I will get a side x side though soon very soon I think. Can't wait to see the Polaris Razor and the new Rhino for 08.... :D

My boys started at 6 and 8 when I got a 250 TRX. Rule was second gear but they pushed it a few times. Safety gear is a must from the start with NO exceptions EVER. Get her into the habit of refusing to get on without a helmet now and she will never even cruise around the yard without one later. If she has a great time and she always uses safety gear she will convince Mom that riding is a good thing. And if Mom sees that she is well supervised and learning safely and enjoying it Mom will have a much harder time finding reasons to complain. Good luck.

She will be fine. Me and my 3 brothers where on dirtbikes before we could ride a pedal bike.. I remeber standing on a milk crate to get on my old cr 125. as long as you wear the right gear your good to go.

I started riding when I was nine, on a polaris scrambler 90 and i was probably some where around four feet nine inches tall and my dad never had the throttle set back all the way and i was fine with it. I definetly dont think that she shouldnt be able to ride because of her age if you take the right safety percautions, My dad and i wish we would have started earlier.

I bought my little guy a goicanni 50cc last year and he was only 2 1/2... he's been riding it for a year now... Took it wasy at first just went out walking in the field with him.. after a month or so took the limiter off.. now we take the two out every couple of nights and put on 3 or 4 miles and let him play... It will do 30 miles and hour but he is able to respect it... theres a time and a place to grab a mitt full....

I let my 2 1/2 dirve my 700 lol! With me sitting with her of course. I leave it in low and keep my fingure infront of the throtle so she can't over do it. i help her with steering to of course! But she does always wanna go faster! My neighbors got one of those canadian tire quads for his 9 year old and I let my 10 year old step son drive my 700 on his own. I explained the rules, leave it in low and don't be a jack ass! He has tried some stuff but he has been pretty good. 8 is alright as long as you trust her.
