I am looking at purchasing a used Remington 700 BDL, 6mm for hunting deer. It comes with a good scope but I can't remember the scope make and model. I'll say its an average price scope and well taken care of. The rifle is like new condition and about 20 to 25yrs old. I am told its accurate to 300 yards. I was originally looking for a .270 when this one came along.

Question.....is this a good hunting rifle for deer and what would be a resonable cost for it?

Thanks for any help.

I Have Shot A 6mm For Many Years And I Swear By It. I Found A Load That I Have Been Using For A While And Never Had A Deer Run For Long After Being Hit. I Also Use The Same Load For Varments Great All Around Gun Buy It. Price Wise I Am Not Sure But You Can Phone Frank At Sir And He Will Tell U What It Is Worth. Shot A Huge Male Timberwolf On Sunday And He Didn`t Run Very Far After Being Vented

With any caliber discussion for deer, the single most important factor is shot placement. That said, a 6mm can and certainly will take any deer walking but I would be selective of the shots I would take as the bullets are fairly lightweight. Limit yourself to broadside or quartering away shots.

Here are the ballistics for the 6mm Rem. with 100 grain Hornady Interlock

Muzzle ........ 100 yd ............ 200 yd ... ......... 300 yd ............. 400 yd
3100/2133.......2861/1817 ........2634/1541 ........2419/1299 .......2213/1087

...and for the .270 Win. with 130 grain for comparison.

Muzzle ......... 100 yd ......... 200 yd .......... 300 yd ................. 400 yd
3060/2702 .....2825/2304.... .2603/1955 ..........2391/1649 ..........2188/1382

Ballistics aside, the Remington 700 is an excellent rifle with a long and well deserved reputation for accuracy. See if the seller will allow you to test fire it before the final purchase to confirm it's function (offer to leave a deposit if they are reluctant) and don't worry about the scope to much, you can always replace that later if you need to. What is the asking price ?

Thanks for the input. He is firm on $450........ scope included and I think this is a fair price from research I have done.

If the gun is in as good a shape as you say it is that would be a good/very fair deal.My advise to you if you do get another scope for it,spend the extra cash and invest in a good quality scope .

You can't really go wrong with a well cared for 700. They are great rifles like most have already said.
I agree with Wolf in that it's a pretty light bullet so shot placement and a good quality bullet would be important.
