View Full Version : Long shot
Now I don't advocate taking shots like this on game but, that said... listen when he confirms the range to the deer !
**warning, graphic video**
(may be offensive to some...but, then why are you watching it ?!! LOL)

Saw this on canadiangunnutz.com I don't call that hunting. Its more like retired old farts who cant actually hunt so they buy a big gun with a table/ holding device for the gun and just pull the trigger. In that video one animal actually runs off, what a great shot eh! In my opinion theres just no use for .50 BMG rifles other than for military snipers.

That's extreme for sure. Interesting to see a vapour trail as the bullet travels. You'd want a nice windless day to take a shot like that. Bullet must be in flight for around a second at 890 yards.

The whole area of hunting is so open to debate. On the one hand someone's opinion is that its not right unless you give the game a sporting chance. But what's that really mean? On the other hand someone points out that you should only take a safe, humane shot, unlikely to only wound your quarry. Then most hunters wouldn't hesitate to take a running shot. But how many who take running shots can say they never hit the deer somewhere that didn't drop the deer? Didn't lead enough and got it in the ass end? Or needed a second shot to finish it. In some ways, dead is dead, and as long as 1) good conservation strategy permits hunting, and 2) the game is killed in a humane manor with a minimum of suffering, 3) the meat is utilized, I could care less whether you shot it at 800 yards with a 50 bmg, took it on a running shot at 75 yards, or sat in a heated blind by a natural feeding area eating sandwiches and coffee before you killed it with a tack driver. I do however appreciate the efforts of someone who uses skill and effort to create an opportunity for themself. But I'm not going to call someone down for taking an easy shot either, just because they didnt' have to spend hours walking, sitting or hiking. Its the same end result. No one is saying you can't buy your steak at the store either.
Thoughts? Do we need to be challenged for hunting to be ethical? And how much challenge / risk of an improperly placed shot is acceptable?

I've shot broadside deer with a 7mm mag at under 50yds(and hit them where it counts) and had them run off like that. Deer are amazing at being able to run away dead on their feet. They don't go far though.
Why should the military be the only ones with 50BMGs? Guns are not only for killing, some of us use them for target shooting. The longer the range the greater the challenge. That goes the same for smaller guns, long range shooting is fun.
For hunting I like to get as close as possible and know where my gun shoots at ALL ranges. If I have to take a long shot and know I can make it, I take it. I also cheat by having a range finder with me.

I'm pretty sure the critter that took off after being hit was an elk.
I guess your right the big .50's can be used for targeting, just not on live animals (imo) like the knobs in the video are doing.

..it's all whitetail doe my friend !
Anyway guys, lets not turn this into a debate about hunting ethics. GrizzleyPeg makes a good point that what one person perceives as OK, others may not.
I just thought the first shot was pretty good...personal ethics aside, he nailed it.
...and who said anything about that rifle being a .50 ??
The bolt looks pretty thin for that round, I would guess one of the big 30's.

I agree that deer are amazing at taking punishment and are able to run away. I nailed a doe 2 years ago with a 30.06 165 grain bullet at 30 yards. She went twice that far with out a heart or 2 lungs!
As for the ethics of this type of hunting....I will not chime in, though I like to get as close as I can as well!

Sorry to continue with the "debate", but this is actually a intersting topic. Hunting ethics I mean. Almost as bad as discussing religion! Anyways, I love long shots aswell, but only when it comes to targets. The problem with shooting over 400 yards is not whether or not you can do it, but finding the deer after! But shots should be made as ethically as possible. If your very confident with taking a long shot, and we should all know our limits, and feel confident with picking landmarks of where the deer was so that tracking would be no problem, then GIVER! My 30-30 200 yards is on the far end in my opinion, But I did take a deer at 270 yards with it. For my 30-06 I use 400 yards as my max, Basically because I have trouble seeing colour and in the fall without snow I won't find the blood trail and any further is to far to pin point where the deer ran into the bush. Also a small flinch or bad wind will through that bullet anywhere but where you want it. And thats what I'm comfortable and confident with.
