can anyone tell me if this machine has hydraulic lifters or do the valves need to be shimmed after a certain amount of riding???

I know the Sportsmans do have a spot on the side of the head to chack the valve lash. The dealers have done this to my buddy's 500 H.O. The valve cover is lifted up for access to adjust, and there should be a port on one side of the head that opens up to get a gapper to check how far out the valve lash is. This made a good improvement once he reset his valves. If i remember correctly, our dealer said to check every year, to keep it dialed in.....it is good preventative maintenance forsure, and it does bring a noticeable difference once it's done.

thanks, i know the new sportsmans have hydraulic lifters, but i think mine should be manually set. i have 1800 miles on it and its a little rattly sounding but i noticed they all sound this way. i guess it doesnt hurt to have them set. thanks for the post!

when i took my 2004.5 500 HO in to get the valves adjusted, on my work order it says that the valve clearance is (.8) Im pretty sure in the manual it tells you when to get this done....

if you dont mind me asking, where did you get it done and how much did it cost?
prior to getting yours set did you motor sound a tiny bit rattly? mine runs awesome but i just dont want to do any damage to the motor by not setting them.

I got it done at Headingly since my quad was in there for some autopac repairs after a buddy thought he could do a caddy but failed...... It cost only arond $60-$70 i think.... just call and ask they will let u know.... Also if you only hear the ticking sound when u start it then it goes away it would just be your starter ( normal ) The starter stayes engaged for a second even after u start the machine.. But its defenitly a good idea to get your valves adjusted, wont hurt anything would only improve.....

i borrowed a manual off my friend today and they tell you exactly how to set them, the specs are .006" using feeler gauges between the two valves.
