I just picked up a 02 polaris 500 for the wife for what I thought was a good price. I now know why the price was good. It will go into 4wd on it's own and the spedo reads 20-40 kph even with the key off. When the key is on the spedo will go way up or some times back to zero. The spedo does not work correctly any time. When the bike is in 4wd it seems to stay in 4wd. There are some other mecanical problems which I knew about ( tie rod ends, lower ball joints, brake pads) these are easy to fix and do not bother me, but the other problems do. Any ideas as to where I should be starting to look? Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

If it was me I would start with the grounds and check all connectors. Clean with contact cleaner and use diaelectric grease.

The speedo is toast. That is the cause of the 4x4 problems. Get a new speedo and all should be good.

I know this is alittle off topic but, after my nasty ride saterday , every time I fire up my bike my little wrench flashes for a bit then goes away. Any idea why. And again sorry for being off topic.

The flashing wrench might be telling you your up for an oil change, it should tell you in your owners manual how to reset it.
Just a tip......alot of the sportsmans from those years had trouble with the speed sensor at the front right wheel. It is a sensor bolted at the hub, and the wiring runs to your speedometer pod. Just for shits and giggles, try and disconnect the speedo from the connection and see what it acts like. I had an 02 700, where the speedo was acting irradically, and i tried disconnecting the speedo, and the problem was gone. I still had 4x4, and all the codes were working on the display. Everything worked except the odometer itself. But i can't remember if the 02 500's had the same speedo.....does yours have the display, showing your gears, miles, etc..??? It may have been the older style with just the mileage on it, but never the less give it a try, just to troubleshoot it.

I would say this is the issue as well mudbugger. If you were mudding, who knows, you may have enabled the service reminder.

ya, the flashing wrench means oil change is up......to change the oil life span in hours you have to turn off your key wait ten seconds then press and hold the rev/overide button for ten seconds and turn your key on while holing it down. youll see a different menu come up on the screen and just depress the overide button to scroll through the options. once your on the wrench you can change your oil life time......you can also change you speedo to read miles/km's which ever you prefer. if you have an engine problem your speedo needle will flash.
p.s- to get into the menu make sure your quad is in neutral.......to get out of the menu you either put the quad in park or just turn off the key. hope this helps

I have over 3000miles and this is the first time I have seen this. Would it be beause I pretty much ran out of fuel?

No, it's just flashing because in the service mode, the hours are set, and if the hours were changed, or if it is actually due, this is when it'll blink.
Shouldn't be because of low fuel.
