I have a 98 polaris with a 2 stroke 400 with 375 miles. When travelling between 20 and 30 mph there is a rattling type noise that can be heard. It is only heard with light throttle. If you back off or accelerate, the noise goes away. I was looking for this sound and placed a piece of wood on the head and can hear a tapping/rattle type noise.

I am not familiar with 2 strokes, so I am not sure if this should sound like this or not. I suspect it shouldn't. Does anybody have any idea on what this is or how I should begin to diagnose this?

Thanks
Jason

Check your oil in your counterbalance. I had the gear that goes from the crankshaft to the counterbalance strip and it was making kind of a rattling sound because the teeth didn't always grab on the two gears. Once it goes completely the only indication you will have of a problem is the overheat light will come on. Counterbalance drives both the water pump and the oil injection. This can be very expensive to repair. Try looking for a rebuilt bottom end on ebay. I have a contact from the U.S. that rebuilt my bottom for about $1000.

I know where you can get a comlete rebuilt engine. If you're interested let me know. I know someone who will be parting out his sportsman because his tranny blew the other day.
