eiter ball joint , tierods, or wheel bearing, ... look where the movment is from and then you know. might be easyer for you if some moves the wheel for you as yu look where the play is comming from.

count the turns of the tie rod when you take the old one off
that will make it easier to align your wheels when you put the old one on
turn the old one off 10 turns - put the new one on 10 turns and you should be close to having your front wheels straight.
other wise its a snap, the hardest part is taking the old one out of the hub
loosen the nut to the end of the stud, and give it a whack with a hammer,
should pop right out.

well if one is worn out might as well change both and you could always keep the other one as a spare if it still seems good thats my 2 centsmake sure you check your balljoints  :humbs:

What if you have your one hand at the top of the tire and the other at the bottom. Do you feel the play then? Or do you only feel it when you hands are at the 3 and 9 position ? If you only feel it at the 3 and 9 then you got a bad tie rod.

You really do need to get someone to move the wheel for you and look for where that play is comming from before you change all these wrong parts. If you have as much play as you say it should be easy too see the loose parts. If your mechanical abilties are a bit low i would suggest recruiting a freind with a mechaical aptitude just for a bit of support just so that the parts you change are the correct ones and for your safety as well. Remember these parts you talking about are what keep you on the road and if installed incorectly you could be asking for more trouble. If you have no friends that are able to help your more then your welcome to come on down here if you don't live too far away and i''ll give you hand anytime. i got all the toys and goodies to get the job done.

:banghead: i figured it out and is good to go again.feel like a fool but here it is, i didn;t tighten the nut enough to seat the bearing, snugged it up and yee-haw!Thanks for the advice and offering your help, great site and better people :bye:

Ah ha but did you actualy tighten enough and now it is loose because it is actually worn out ? I would keep a very close eye on it or take it out and make sure it still turns smoth, if you can feel it turning a little rough it is no good and it wears itself loose. Allot of people have been taken by surprise that way. A good idea is get a torqe wrench on there and tighten it up to the proper specs to be sure, To tight will causea bearing to wear out fast and loose will hammer the heck out of it pretty fast too.

ah ha piont taken, i will get the torque spec and do this, again thank you

IF you don,t have a buddy to give you a hand you can always tie the handle bars down with ratchet straps to the back rack nice and tight then you can check your hole front end and check your toe in while your at it go by specs

And heck while we're on the topic, the best way to check for warn parts on your front end is leave the front wheels on the ground, that is the way that the parts that are wearing are in ther looses positions, When you lift the front all the ball joints and tie rods are now put on a angle which tightens them up (binds them)..

Hope this helps people.
