Well today I cracked the 1800 mile mark on my 05 outie max. I bought it in september. And here is my list of the good and the bad.

All start with the bad
1: it has a very crappy shifting linkage set up. hard to shift sometime, easy to bend the shifter.

2: I find for its size to be a little on the underpowered side, especially if your a aggressive rider.

3: The extra long frame makes it a lot easier to get hang up, especially in the snow.

4: When you hit the brakes hard it makes this terrible noise like your front end is falling apart. (its normal)

5: It does not idle well at -30 below, thats to be expected.

Now the good

1: the ride is uncomparable to any quad out there, very smooth, super comfy.
( p.s i have tried every04/05 brand except for suzie.)

2: good ground clearance.

3: very reliable, not once was I stranded or towed back from a ride.or even had a minor mechanical melfunction.

4: very stable at high speeds during sharp cornering.

5: The removeable second seat, well designed and comfy. Also your passenger is legally covered in case of a accident.

At 1800miles I am running the original belt, spark plug and brake pads. Removed my belt cover at 1300miles and cleaned the clutches. I routinely grease the 5 grease fittings, oil changes(3) and blow out the air filter thats about it for routine maintance.

In case any one is thinking about buying an outie, this is what you can "hopefully" expect. The above info is in my humble objective opinion.

P.S the 1800miles has seen water, sand, mud and snow.throttle down. :woohoo: :leaving:
I'm curious what other outie owners have to say.

1400 miles purchased April 04 Outi Max

My comparisons in bold type below:

1: it has a very crappy shifting linkage set up. hard to shift sometime, easy to bend the shifter.

agree ... Does require the the little ole outi hump now and then in order to shift

2: I find for its size to be a little on the underpowered side, especially if your a aggressive rider.

not an agressive rider, don't consider it shy of power for a 400cc. I have never run out of power even on very steep hill climbs in low. I run tracks which are quite a load too.

3: The extra long frame makes it a lot easier to get hang up, especially in the snow.

never rode a standard length frame in winter too compare. Rode with wheels this winter... no problems.... rode with tracks, no comparison to riding with wheels :D

4: When you hit the brakes hard it makes this terrible noise like your front end is falling apart. (its normal)

no comment...never rode as such a speed that I had to lock up the brakes in an emergency .... under normal braking conditions very satisfactory.

5: It does not idle well at -30 below, thats to be expected.

agreed

6: would like to add the turning radius is the pits

7: If you use a really aggressive tire like a mudzilla which will provide you with a lot of traction, you risk breaking cv joints when in reverse with the front wheels cranked. The machine can supply more torque in reverse than what the cv joints can handle

Now the good

1: the ride is uncomparable to any quad out there, very smooth, super comfy.
( p.s i have tried every04/05 brand except for suzie.)

agreed

2: good ground clearance.

acceptable..another inch or two would have been nice

3: very reliable, not once was I stranded or towed back from a ride.or even had a minor mechanical melfunction.

agreed

4: very stable at high speeds during sharp cornering.

agreed

5: The removeable second seat, well designed and comfy. Also your passenger is legally covered in case of a accident.

agreed .. not to mention that it was so well designed that you often forget you have a passenger

would like to add that the engine brakeing is awesome as well as the 'visca-lock' front end works very well

At 1800miles I am running the original belt, spark plug and brake pads. Removed my belt cover at 1300miles and cleaned the clutches. I routinely grease the 5 grease fittings, oil changes(3) and blow out the air filter thats about it for routine maintance.

changed my belt at 1300 mi. due to belt slippage which showed up with the load of having the tracks on. balance of maintenance is the same as above

In case any one is thinking about buying an outie, this is what you can "hopefully" expect. The above info is in my humble objective opinion.

P.S the 1800miles has seen water,sand,mud and snow.throttle down.

water, sand, mud and snow. Lots of slow rough terrain riding. Lots of crawling over logs and through deep mud holes. All slow speed, make and let the machine work riding

I'm curious what other outie owners h
ave to say.

I found this posted on another forum... This is on an outy that they have.....

" i had problems with my front brakes, i had 4 bolts missing out of the rotors, 2 on both sides, and after one ride i would have no brakes left and the handle would go all the way to the bar with little effort, the rear brakes are still stock and i can still lock my bike up with them. i got my front brakes changed to Dunlop brake pads and had no problems since. make sure yer dealer tightens up the front rotor bolts.u can tell if u have no brakes or rotors if u hit the brakes and it sounds like a mack truck trying to stop, u get really weird looks, and scared looks when u r going down a steep hill and the person in front of you hears it, after they hear it they go down that hill rather quickly Laughing our dealer didnt cover it under warranty when they shouldve, its the material the stock brakes are made out of."

Does this describe the brake noise that you were complaining about?

Thanks Maxter

That could very well be the problem, that would describe the noise although I have full braking and the lever does not go flat. I'm at work rite now I'l check it out when I get home will let you know.
