K guys, Today I picked up a 1983 Yamaha 225DX. The guy I bought it off said it wont run properly, It will turn on then turn off.
So we bought it home and opened the gas cap and it smelled like really old gas. So we pulled the fuel line off the carb and drained the tank. Then we went to drain the carb so we took out the drain screw and Green gas came out..:confused3 Yes Green, never seen this before. So we took the carb off, Pulled the bowl and the inside was just thick dried on green gunk. Me and my dad were both amazed. Never ever seen this. So we started taking it apart and cleaning it all with Carb Cleaner. Cleaned out all the little pin holes and everything, Let it soak. Then we put it all back together got it on the trike and put a battery in it.. Put the choke on full and turned it over and it fired right up then stopped. Tried again same thing.
So now all it will do is run for like 10 seconds on full choke and stop. And after it stops it will fire right up but then stop.. We have checked everything. Checked the fuel line, took the petcock out and made sure that was working. Still nothing.
Hope someone will help me with this because I really dont wanna take it in to get carb work done if i dont have to.
Thanks Mitchell

I don't have any solution to your problem but that is a great looking trike. looks to be in really great shape. I hope someone on here can help you out.

Chek the floats in the carb. I don't recall what type of carb it has but if there's float in the bowl inspect them to see if they are filled with gas. Check the needle and make sure it's working freely. I know you've clened the carb but it's worth a double check. If you can get your self some carb cleaner in a four litre jug tehn get a container and let that carb soak over night. MAke sure you remove any plastic on the carb. If you just cleaned it with a spray type carb cleaner it won't get into the carb as well as a full submersion into carb cleaner. Piston Ring sells the good stuff. Goos luck.

soak your carb again over night in carb cleaner & also clean your tank out & check your feul lines as the can be weathered & can colasp inside.
even put an inline filter at the start

Sounds like it's starving for gas. Clean the tank well, put new fuel lines on it and make sure the petcock is cleaned out as well. Also an inline filter. If you didn't clean the tank you might have some dirt or other crap back in the carb again blocking the flow of gas. JMO:cheers:
P.S. Nice looking machine, I had one back in 1983.

Just be careful with the tip cleaners. Just clean the holes, don't enlarge them.

Take the bottom bowl off the carb and then fill it with fuel, set the floats inside and see if they float or sink.If they sink you'll need new floats. Also set your float level to parralel to the bottom of the carb base.Lastly, make sure that the needle and seat are in good shape, with the needle having no distortion, the seat also in good shape.Any minute imperfection and you need a new needle and seat assembly.

K I cleaned it all up, put it on and it only ran for about 30 seconds with full choke and the idle screw right out too. Took it off again and cleaned it all again, put it back on and it will run for about a minute with full choke on but you still cant turn the choke off or touch the throttle. So tomorrow i'll get my dad to pick up that heavy duty carb cleaner and let that soak and if that doesn't work I guess I will either look for a carb kit or find a used carb. Thanks for the help guys!

Sounds like a plugged pilot jet. When it's plugged there is no fuel supplied at idle. Only choke(enrichment circuit actually) fuel will keep it running. Sorry to say but pull the carb again and make sure that it's clear.

Well, Took the carb off AGAIN, Found those tip cleaners and cleaned everything again then I took Outlaws advice ans adjusted the float and put it all back together and stoarted it on full choke and started turning in the Idle screw and the idle started going up. I was impressed, Tried to turn the throttle and it sputtered then reved right up. So now I guess we will jut let it self clean out a bit and adjust the idle abit.
Thanks alot for all the help guys!!
All back together and cleaned up

K guys another problem, The trike will start up but it wont idle worth a darn but it will stay running if you keep on the throttle. Then I pulled the plug today and its running lean. Guessing I will ahve to take it in to either get the carb rebuild or get it adjusted. Might as well try here to see if I can do it myself!
Thanks Guys

Did you also pull the pilot jet and clean it out as yamahay suggested?Proper choke, fuel, air adjustments?Fuel pump working up to par?Pinched lines, blocked fittings, sometimes welch plugs need to be removed as clogging happens inside those passageways...........hard to say over the computer.
