View Full Version : Shilo Poker Derby April 16 (Sat)

Just got off the phone with Chris owner of "Cecils Bar & Grill". He gave me a heads up about a derby that will be held in Shilo, April 16.
The trail will be a one way and apparently he said we have permission to run on the CFB Shilo Ranges. This means the ride is open to a vast area that is not open to the public most other times.
The ride will be about 80kms distance.
I will be contacting CFB Shilo Range Control to set up a time to begin marking the route.
The Spruce Woods Fish and Game Club will recieve half of the money raised and the other half will go to cash prizes as usual.
I'll post more as it comes, and as I set the route.
Thanks,
Paul

Sounds awesome guys, I'll be there forsure. If you want to go on some more rides this winter on Saturday let me know and I'll join ya for one or two. There even might be some other who would like to go.

Anything special planned for this derby? Like that obstacle course, rocks, logs, etc like you hinted at last fall?

I just checked my schedule for April and I'm actually off that day. So it looks good!! :woohoo: Trigger give us a run down of the terrian. Will there be sand dunes on the run? I know there are some really great sand dunes in that area. The range has lots of them, so if you already have open range permission why not plan the route in the sand. Nacho and I went on a few last year. Lots of fun. Or will be mostly forest? Should we bring an extra sandwich along? .
If you need a hand setting anything up, signing, etc. I would like to help out. I could even run a check point on the day if you need someone. Let me know, via PM or leave a message on my Yahoo e-mail address.

WOW :D Glad to see all the support and excitment for this derby.
I'll try to answer all your questions.
First for BBertram>>
Yes, I want an obstacle course involved, but it will also need a route around it for those who don't wish to attempt it. I have to confirm it with the club that is running the event...there could be "insurance issues" :baby:
Mooseman>>> Thanks for offering your support and time...I'll let you know if there is anything you can do, first we have to see howmany "volenteers" the wildlife club can get.
Also as far as the route threw the Shilo Ranges>>> I am totally unsure where we can go there as of yet. I know it won't be "free run", as there are some impact areas nobody would want to end up in! :omg:
Range Control might limit us to an area or a few areas...or possibly even declair a route (I hope not...they'll pick something boring I'm sure).
The wildlife club is having a meeting March 25 to confirm everything for me, at that time I will have more answers.

Hey just wondering: :confused3 If any bodys going to the shilo derby and has some extra room on their trailer and vehicle. :thnx: lets see if we can load up trucks and trailers to be more efficient. :humbs: Splitting gas 3 or four ways is a lot cheaper than having a lot of trucks on the highway with one guy in it. If any body has room for me and my kodiak 400 let me know! :cool2: I have a trailer i can put my quad on if someone doesnt mind pulling it? But a larger trailer would be better! Its a 2 hour drive there and a 2 hour drive back. That equals a lot of fuel!!! Let me know if this is something we should consider? :thnx: I think we should try to get as many people together as possible. Hey Big Brute----you in? :jump:

Hey Mm there is another track for this area posted under GPS Tracks titled Sprucewoods - Camp Hughes / Shilo which can be found at this thread http://www.trackshare.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1700 It contains the shilo derby area as well as the Camp hughes (south) area which is across the marsh (east) from the Shilo derby area. The area that is missing are tracks from last years Carbury derby which extended into the military bases' restricted zone. The same zone that Trigger222 is talking about but I expect he will be taking us onto a differnt part of the range.. These tracks contain OziEplorer as well as mapsouce files. which ever turns your crank man.

I will confirm this with Nachobiscuit. We may have enough room for one more quad. I'll get back to you.

Before you rent anything I can easily get a 3-4 quad trailer from my neighbour. So let me know what you want to do, and if we have enough peeps I'll simply borrow it from him.

Check with your dealership also. Sometimes they'll let you borrow, or low rent one of their trailers if you're on good terms with them.
I'm very happy to see all the folks that want to ride the derby and look forward to meeting you all, and seeing some of the old faces again :D
Like I said before, I'll have all the information for this derby once the "Club" has their meeting.

Just got threw with the Spruce Woods Wildlife club meeting.
It's confermed the CFB Shilo ranges are open.
Chris and I have to contact the range Officer to confirm the area we can ride or the prescribed safe route.
Once I meet with him next Thursday I'll post the info.
I will try my damnedest to mark the whole route with GPS and have maps printed off for the derby, this will make it easier for some to find their way.
Someone was supposed to take care of making route signs, but it hasn't been done yet, I'll try to get that done in time so nobody will have to try and follow the "orange" hunters ribbon.
I only ask one thing of all people coming to the Shilo Poker Derby.
"When you're on the CFB Shilo ranges, please stay on the route for 2 reasons:
1> They are having a problem with other ATV'ers in the area sneeking onto the ranges to ride...if you're caught off the prescribed route they might not let us back on next time we have a Poker Derby.
2> It's dangerous to go off the perscribed route in some areas. CFB Shilo is a military training area for the Artillery, Infantry and Armoured Regiments, although the military tries to keep track of "unexploded ordinance" there is still a risk of running into something you don't want to. This is because the training area has been used extensively threw WWll, and back then they didn't really keep track of "unexploded ordinance"! Please stay on the route, and don't pick up anything shiny for souveniers, you could be injured seriously!
Now after saying all of that, "Who still want's to ride?"
Don't worry, it is safe along the perscribed route and in most areas of the ranges, but I'd rather see everyone safe and having fun so we can do it again next time.

Chris, owner of Cecils Sports Bar did most of the work setting it up and getting permission.

Man you must love to ride.
I hope it's your most enjoyable trip ever...and I'll do my best to make sure it's worth the ride...Infact I want this Derby route to be the best anyone has done in MB.
I can't say the whole country, because I've been on some "kick sss" derbs down east, and I hear that the foot hills of AB is something else too.

Infact we're planning a ride in the "foothills" of AB in August 06...maybe 05 if everyone can get their leave at the same time.
I'll post more on that when we sit and have coffee to talk about it, and I'd love to see the whole "trakshr" crew come....all flyin' their flags. :welcome:

Hey Trigger give us an update on the Shilo Derby??

Mm
:jump:

OK, here it is.
Shilo Range control hasn't responded yet to your "memo" to enter the Shilo Ranges, however, we assume they will give us the "go" tomorrow when the Range Boss returns from leave.
The trail is being marked tomorrow evening, and will consist of some new trails that have been made on Sunday.
The trails are technical with a few logs to climb, sport atv's may have a challenge.
Also don't forget that these new trails are "new"....there is a lot of shrubs pushed down, and you should wear a long sleeve shirt, and goggles to protect yourself.
We also will enter the swamp route, it is very messy after the fast winter melt....get out your rain gear! :woot:
There will also be some ditch riding to get to another area along the Assiniboine River Wildlife Coridoor.
Along this route will be a "Death Drop". There will be an alternate route for those without experience, or ATV's unable to handle the mud at the bottom of the drop.
The "Death Drop" is a steep decent to a small valley that is almost total mud and bog.
I don't recommend it for anyone without 4X4 and lots of experience.
It's only about a 20ft drop, and at then about 100ft to the other side, but it could take about 2 hours to get threw...infact it has taken a goup of us about that long...the more that go threw it the worse it gets.
People can park on the other side and watch the happenings if they wish.
It's a short ride on the "sissy" route to get there...lol.
But seriously, I've been down there, and if 20 others were already threw I wouldn't go at all, because it would be too chewed up.
I really hope you all enjoy it, we worked hard at making the route long, and exciting, with a little bit of everything for everyone.
Also, if anyone is interested, a group of us will be going to "Duck Mtn" on June 29th to July 4th 2005.
I no longer have internet access at my home, and have to log on at my friends home...so give me time to respond.
Thanks
Paul

The derby starts I believe at 10 or 11 am.
I know that (the start point) Cecil's Bar & Grill will be having a breakfast buffet on for $6.00.
Coffee, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, coffee etc.
Also gas in this area is 92.5 cents/litre right now.
There will also be gas available for purchase half way threw the race at one of the check stops. Probably about $1.00/litre....that's not bad since the price in some places of MB is over a buck.
From what I hear gas is $1.02/ltr in Wpg (can anyone conferm this?)...if it's true you guys might want to bring your "Jerry Cans" and fill up.
Hope to see ya'll there.

Thanks again Trigger for taking the lead on this Derby. I know you have put allot of work into it and there will be many people that will benefit from this first ride of Spring. Thanks so much!!!
Again if you need a hand signing or some-one to keep an eye on things I'm available.

If you don't want to do Smittys we can always hit up Humptys. They have a very filling Pan Scrambler breakfast, should be good for the whole day.

I hope to have my flag pole and flag by the derby. So if we eat early, hit the derby early and park our quads at cecils with the flags the trackshare gang will know where to find us. Then once we think everyone is there we can move out.

I'm sure there won't be enough parking at cecils for everyone, we should have a trackshare parking spot, lol. Have a sign on the road saying, "Trackshare members park here."

If you guys want a "TS Parking" area, just go past Cecil's when you hit CFB Shilo, there will be a parking area on the left side of the Spruce Treeline just before the right turn.
Make that the trackshare parking so we know where to find us all.
It's ok to park there...lots of people use it as a place to park their horse trailers when they go riding.

:leaving: Moose you're reffering to the south gate, I'm talking about the north gate just past Cecil's, where the old gaurd shack used to be.
It will be perfect for parking, and only locals know they can use it, so it shouldn't get packed up.

Also, range control dropped out proposed route for the derby, so the ranges are off limits...Sorry
The problem with it was, as you know Mooseman the military is offline quite a bit, anyway, we had permission from the previous Range Capt and Sgt Maj, they said..."just submit it in writting a week before the Derby.
Well, ofcourse as sure as I'm sitting here....those two got posted out this summer and replaced by two others.
The new Range Capt and Sgt Maj won't let our proposal fly.
There are ofcourse other ways we can try to get permission onto the ranges, but they will take time...something we don't have right now.
But I did prepare for this and make an alternate route, and it will be just as enjoyable I'm sure.
Also, we are going to submit a "memo" to the base ops in writing for permission to enter the ranges on our next derby, we will work out a date and everything, and have it signed by the base CO...that way we will get the ranges come "Hell or High Water"!...unless of course some military emergency takes presidence over our derby.
The route will have some ditch driving...sorry, there is no other way to get to the nice spots to ride without taking a ditch or the Shilo Ranges....No ranges means we must "ditch dog it"!
But it will be worth it...trust me...also I'm told the folks with Sport ATV's enjoy ditch driving...so that means something for everyone.
NOTE: Folks with the Sport ATV's, please don't curse me when you come to the rough technical areas of the course..just grit your teeth and bear it.

This will help those of you who have MapSource (Garmin) to find the parking area.
The route on here might be the last leg of the Derby, but It's going to be changed a bit tomorrow, so don't use it to find your way...lol
The main thing is it will help you understand where the TrackShare Parking area is.
Don't take the precise grid, I "eyeballed" it on the program.
Hope this works

Weather conditions here:
>The fast melt: This made the swamp that was done last year very wet, but we can get threw it. Remember the mud holes off the derby trail, well, they look like rivers right now...That'll be deep for you Nacho....I wouldn't recommend going there yet. Remember, "It's a floating bog, that's like a grass sod floating ontop of a lake...if you go far off the trails and break threw the bog, you could end up walking home if you're lucky!
>Rain: We had rain and damp conditions since Monday.
>Trail Condition: The trails are still quite good. They are slightly slick in the treed area, the sand on the trails is dry, small puddles on the ditches. The swamp is quite wet and lots of deep mud holes, always an easy way around them except for the turn at the "Bull Rushes"...It's balls deep in mud, and the only way around it is thew the Bullrushes, but that's deep water so take your time and kneel on the seat if you don't want to get wet.
If you take your time and crawl threw you shouldn't even get very muddy.
In the forest I will be using some of the old route because it was a nice ride and puts on some good K's.
The new trails have a lot of log climbing and you might still have to push some "sapplings" (small trees and bush) down until the path opens up after a few riders. These trails are totally new. We started one this winter and the other one was started on Saturday.
I think most will really like the new trails because they require a rider to think, test and improve their skills. They are slow speed trails (because they're new and still have growth over them), but it's nice just to bulldozer threw and see what they can climb over, rather than just tackle mud.
When the trail ride is over, I'd appreciate any comments on the trail...Good or Bad. So I can work on improving things for the next one.
Even if you guys think I should get out there with and axe and trim down those shrubs...let me know.

Sport quads should be alright if they don't spin the wheels too much when going threw the water.
The water is not quite at the top of my tires, except at water holes, but there's ways around them.
The sport quads can even make it over the logs, but the might have trouble.
I wouldn't worry, last year a sport quad came with us to mark the swamp trail, and he had no trouble.

Hey Trigger:
When is your official retirement day,or FREEDOM DAY!! I have a good idea. :leaving: D.E.R.B.Y time!!!

Mm :woohoo:

:woohoo: Official Retirement day is July 10 2005 :leaving: .That'll give me an 18 year pension...that would work out to about $2500.00/month including my Vetrans Pension, not a bad amout if I also work another job...let's face it I'm only 35 yrs old...lot's of time to make money.
Some people are almost disgusted with me when I tell them howmuch I'll be making from my pension, and they say..."Damn, I wish I did it the way you did", all I have to say to them is, "I joined when I was 17yrs old, the military robbed me of my youth, I was put infront of evil people with weapons and told to hold my ground, I've seen things that would rot the eyes out of a wolf, and I have more faces to carry around in my head than I care too!" I don't think it's all strawberries and cream.

With that said and done, we finally finished marking all the trails for the poker run.
I did the North section with Kris and Bill ( he just bought a Brute 650 and wanted to try it out), and Chris did the South section with Jason.
I used my GPS, but Chris didn't have one, so on the map that I'm attaching, just remember that the South Zone (that is marked with "red" route) is eye balled on the computer since he couldn't GPS the track there.
The North Zone tracks are GPS accurate however.
Bill will be working a check stop and will have his Brute 650 and his sons 360 with them, so if anyone wants to get a good look at the new 650 you're more than welcome to take a look, or just pop in and tell him thanks for his hard work every year to help set up the derby and man a check stop.

I hear ya. Most people say wow that's pretty good money, but I say "I would rather have my health back"!
Don't let the bad stuff ruin the good stuff in life. There's allot of crap out there, but we still live in a pretty good country! We both can say it's pretty good here in Kanuck-land because we've seen other countries that aren't anywhere near as good. As a matter of fact I can say it's the best I have ever seen. Right,Trigger!

You're right MooseMan, it is the best Country in the World and people don't appreciate it enough untill they've been to others for more than a couple of week visits.
And Yep, I'm staying in the Shilo area, it's my home now and I really enjoy it out here. Good hunting and fishing, and there's employment to be found.

Maxter, the map isn't all the same as last year, infact there are only 4 trails that we are overlapping....It looks almost the same because there are so many trails that are adjacent to the ones we're using.
Also the fall run didn't include going south down the wildlife area along the Assiniboine River, and the new trails will be a nice change from flat out riding, they give you more a feeling of "exploring" because they aren't beat down to a perfect path.
You have no choice but to take your time because of "technical turns" between trees, narrow paths, and logs that must be climbed.
We felt that there are alot of people that would enjoy the slower technical asspect rather than just testing the power of their ATV againt mud.
Plus these routes will give "novice" riders a change to build confidence without a great degree of being injured.

Thanks to the search party that came in for my wife and I I must say the route was not very clear to a lot of us.
Seems that there were to many orange markers and we kept on going in circles.
I know I will have a nightmare tonight and wake up screaming like a mouse in a maze that can't find his way out.
All in all it was a good time.

He did OK he definately had a good time! I made sure to do a couple laps around him before I gave him a tug. There was that one section after the hole where I met you, that was just slew and I had to hook up to him and drag him through...but besides that he did pretty darn good.

No proib.. tell you the truth we didnt wern't clear on where to go either.. if it wasn;t for our GPS's we might still be there.. The trail was very poorly marked :( which is a big risk when you have that many quads out there.

well that was shilo derby HmMmmm...........
honest opinion??
extremely poorly marked, and if i wanted to ride fields and gravel roads - i dont have to drive 2 1/2 hours to do that.
i appreciate the time and volunteers it takes to put on a derby, as a member of the Gretna Tractor Pull Assoc. i know what it takes to put an event on.
but honestly this was the worst derby i have attended.
if thats all the terrain you have to put on a derby with, thats fine, but to have that many quads LOST! that can be helped !
we took as many correct turns as incorrect ones !
and we were running into lots of people in the same situation.
thank goodness for the GPS to lead us outta there.
sorry for being blunt, and the other mods can delete this if they wish.
but thats my take on it.

it was a ride, and an excuse to get the great folks of TS out.
that was the day maker, to see the TS turnout ! lots of bikes, quite a few flags, and lots of laughs.
PS the flags worked great, easy to see the group and i got approached a bunch of times today from new people!
met some new members agian , visited with some i knew, silver lining indeed !

I'll comment on the derby tomorrow when I'm more awake. There was only one terrible thing that happened today. When I got home to watch the video, well.....there was no video. Either the tape didn't turn while taping or something or bakes didn't press record. Thats so so disapointing. Went to show some friends and I found nothing. The camera works, I was able to record at their place.

oh well, I'll try for some video at Carburry. I won't be able to to do two derbys in one weekend thats forsure, I get waaaay to muddy and I'm soooo sore and tired.

I would like to thank Trigger for setting up the Derby. Allot of work, and too little help. A few things fell through which made it difficult to organize. The person signing - decided not to at the last minute and the run was cut because the military grounds became OFF LIMITS, another unexpected problem. However there is always next year and we did get to catch-up with friends from the Trackshare family.
Until the next time, see you later gang.

Here are some action shots of BBertram. Sorry we couldn't meet up for supper Brent and Bakes. Next time!!

Thanks guys, but I'd have to agree with SnowMan.
It was the worst derby I've ever been on!
The route marking was terrible.
The club waited till the last minute to give me help to determine a trail and conferm the CFB Shilo ranges.
As it was, I took it upon myself to start figuring out an alternate route if the Ranges fell threw, if I didn't do that we'd be sitting there with our thumbs up our %%%.
Although I didn't mark the south trail, I still feel quite responsible for alot of it, because I delegated the job and didn't double check it.
Normally I would have the route planed 4-5 weeks ahead of time, and marked it 1 week before the derby, then double checked it 2 nights before.
Because of the time restrictions I'm amazed it even happend.
To top it all off, we have a problem with the "new guys" that were posted here to CFB Shilo. They are using our trails with their Jeeps and 4X4 trucks.
As it was, I went out and marked trails Wed night, then went back to finish marking Thursday night, and found alot of the "tape" barriers were drove threw by 4X4 trucks (caught them red handed driving threw there).
Then I had to ride the whole North route and re-do the barriers, also the tree branches that had orange tape tied to them were knocked off by the higher SUV's. I don't think they knew what the tape was for, I'm sure if I had signs and arrows that said "Poker Derby" they wouldn't have run them over or drove threw.
I told the wildlife club that I would not have any more to do with their poker derbies, unless they spend some money on signs and give me more help and more time to secure, plan and mark the route.
I don't know if they will, and I won't know until they make a decide. But I will keep you informed on the next derby, if any. And I will tell you if it's going to be worth the trip or not.
I will not hold anything against anyone if they decide to never come again. I put myself in your shoes, and totally understand.
I've never seen anything like that derby in my life and am ashamed to have put my name on it.
On another note, I know we don't like ditch driving, but without the "Ranges" there is no other way to the areas to ride. I know the Shilo area is dusty, there is nothing that can be done about that. The place is a Desert!
In Chris' defence, he did try making signs and putting them up Friday night, but the wind was too high, and he said it kept blowing down the signs or folding them in half.
I think we wouldn't have a problem with proper signs that are made out of coorigated plastic, made large enough to identify them and printed with arrows and say something like Poker Derby in big letters with a big damn arrow.
Yes, SnowMan, it was terrible, and done very unproffessional.:sorry:

Don't judge the area on the poker derby, it is a very nice area to ride, and I'd like to set up a time when we can all get together and just ride around so you all can see how beautiful the area is.
The evening tour I took MooseMan, Wild Wolverine, and Nacho on was quite nice and relaxing, there's alot of wildlife to see up close too during the Dusk hours, lot's of Deer, the occasional Elk and Moose.

Again, Sorry to all my TrackShare friends. I hope to see you again if I get to go to the Piney Derby, I'll be flying my TS Flag high.

My airfilter is caked with dirt, my quad is actually starving for air and doesn't run properly, lol. I cleaned my quad today and will work on cleaning the air filter tomorrow. Gotta relax some now.

I had fun during the derby, dust or not. I wish it rained yesterday, it would of been way better then. I recommend you route the whole trail with your GPS, make check stops into waypoints and your set. There are so many people with GPS on their ATVs now so it won't be a problem. Also make a sign with a map on it every few miles saying, "you are here."

Would be nice if you could somehow connect Camp Hughes to the derby, that swamp is in the way though or is it a lake?

No problem Outie, it was nice to ride with you guys for most of the day, only thing is when we ran in to you guys at the end, we were as confused about the trail as you were.

We mentioned this to Chris @ Cecils bar and he didn't even care, he was too busy counting his money (litterally), he was sitting there counting his proceeds from the derby to give a crap that there were still 50 bikes lost out there.

Not very impressed thats for sure.

WOW! Thats crazy. I hope he reads these forums, use that money he made and use it for next years derby and really make it good.

Also, why is he putting it on? What did he spend on the derby? He put up $100 for food at checkstop 3 and $10 on orange tape? I hope some of the coin went to the community or something.

LFMAO, well that's the best.
Actually he didn't spend anything. He got the orange tape from the military for free.
However, I must say that he doesn't collect any of the money.
He hosts the derby and the WildLife Club gets the proceeds. He makes money by selling burgers and drinks after the derby.
I did talk to him, and he didn't really seem too conserned about the trail marking.
If the WildLife Club pays to have signs made, and gives me some help and time to set a proper route, I won't be letting anyone else mark the trail without me personally present.
If they can't promise me this for next time, I won't recommend the derby to anyone.

Thats good to hear trigger. The Wildlife Club should hear these complaints, not much Chris can do, wasn't his derby. I do think Chris or someone could put up some money and to get signs made and have an agreement in place to get payed back for the signs.

I also think driving down the street to get from Cecil's to the gas station was a bad idea. Asking for an accident, this old man was shaking his rake at me because I was on his lawn in the ditch. hehe, I wasn't on it much but I moved over onto the pavement. I'm not sure the community appreciates 100's of quads running down their main street.

Some of us said we should of had the start of the derby in that big field across the highway from the gas station. Tons of parking there, no risk of accidents with quad and vehicle. You could have a tent out there with people selling hands. Slap a generator there, have food and stuff. That would be awesome!

If that field could be used for quad events, like a competition or something. Log crossings, water hole crossing, rock crawling, etc. Make it more than just a quad ride. This is how I think you could expand upon the derby without having us run dusty trails.

Hey there fellas, just my own input, no hard feeling meant to anyone here. The organizers have done the best that was possible. My group was the first ones in, Got lost, Went backward 13 miles and realized we werent on the route, the trails were marked like crap. Not much wonder the townsfolk there are so ****ed after a derby there. They puton the derby, and dont cleanup after it. The old signs were still left out there from last year. Someone had moved them for their own use last summer, and thus this derby left most people guessing where the heck they were. We crossed an area along the south river are that 15 trails went into the bush that had orange tape on, that went nowhere. If I wanted to drive ditches roads and fiels this time of year, I would have left the bikes on the trailer and crused in the truck. Im sorry, but dont try to make cash off driving the local roads, people drive long distances to get to the derby, for what, total diapointment, and a face full or dirt and dust to add insult to injury. Also we were the last groupp back at the end of the day, and we were told that we were too late. missed by 10 min, thanks. Thank god that I am farmilure with the area, we ,made our own ride further north to the hydroline and finished off the day properly, WET, MUDDY and verry satisfied. Im sorry if other people dont agree with me, but Ive been to scads of derbys on mb and sask, so far shilo 3 times in a row, worst one yet. Once again sorry if Im offending people, Im just a real honest person. If there was no the end of the derby on the marshland for pople to play, there would be a lot more dissapointed reply here.

Just got back from the McCauly derby today. It was a bit short, 25 miles, but 2 rounds was great, nice area, awseome mud and trails, Beers were cold, and wind was high, but all and all, great ride. Im gonna go and pour myself into the sack now and sleep off the sore bones from todays ride, and contemplate weather to even speak of Shilo derby again.

So long and Well, Thats my 2cents.

i looked at the GPS tracks - the gravel road where we turned around and headed back across that field,
was right where the derby came back up north, so we had the right idea, bypass the south part and head to the north, to the mudholes :)

Hey Trigger, Dont worry about it, its all good. I can understand completely when putting something on and people dont pull their wieght.

just warn us ahead of time for the next one.

So we all agree that the trail marking was the pits. Sure am glad Trigger posted the gps portion of the trail he made. We were lost and with out the gps I'd probably still be there. We did find four others who were lost and they were towing a machine back. Had them follow us back cause we had triggers gps routes loaded. We finished the ride at 6:30 and most everyone else was gone. Through out the day we did meet several TS members that we had met from previuos rides and several other TS members we had never met before. It was a pleasure meeting all of you. Hope to meet all of you again on future rides.
There were several members of our group getting anncy to get going so we rode out about 10:30 figuring the TS members waiting for the late arrivals would be riding fairly fast on the flats and would catch up real soon. Like Jeepster said " I don't know how I lost 20 - 30 quads But I did" We were coming around a corner in a mud hole and there was Bbertram. Finished getting around the corner and the TS crew was gone. Never did meet up with many of you or with Wild Wolverine to collect my TS flag. Had my mast all ready to go.... no flag. (Hope to collect it at Carbury next weekend) Several peeps asked about the empty flag pole so I got to promote TS anyways. I was hesitant about the flag Idea, but It proved to be a great idea. I was able to pick out TS bikes even from a distance.
Due to the poor course markings many TS members missed some of the best mud and trails I've ever seen. Many also missed the new tight bush trails with lots of good log crawling ever.
Trigger, I think you did the best you could under the circumstances and we appreciate your efforts to pick up the ball when it was dropped. No, I don't like flat land, open field, road or ditch running but some might. This course had something for everyone. We just had to put up with the portions that didn't suit our perfered riding styles. The mud was great, the new tight bush trails, that were not all cleaned up made for some very good technical riding and fun as this is the type of riding I prefer, and the regular sandy trails are always fun and easy riding. It was a good idea to start off with the flat land run as those who wanted to could race through it to get to the mud could. (only they didn't know what the north portion had in store for them) Much better than having it at the end. I was disapointed that when we reached the 4th checkstop they were pulling out so we didn't get to finish our hands. same thing when we got back to Cecils.
I usually take pictures but was so muddy that I didn't dare take the camera out. So thanks to those who did and for posting the pics.
My biggest highlite of the day was watching Explorer experiment with his new tires. He had the largest grin on his face all afternoon and kept saying "WOW I can't believe I was missing out on this mud before". (or something similar to that) and then kept saying "hey theres another good looking mud hole just up ahead" Look forward to riding with you again Explorer.

Yes, some folks in Shilo don't support the ATV Derby, however, they must understand, they don't own the road allowance or the ditch and you are within your rights to drive down them. You should have called a cop and charged him for threatening you! That would put them in their place.
Also to ride the roads, just remember to drive with the direction of traffic, no accidents that way...lol.
And I love your idea about some competitive events and possibly starting in a feild. I know many large land owners out here and they would support this on their area, they're very good folks...Infact if I get my 80 acres on the tree line of Spruce Woods, I would be more than proud to host such an event.
Also, I was wondering myself about that other "Orange Tape" on the trails.
I came accross some of it while taking MooseMan, Wild Wolverine and Nacho on an after hours tour. The only thing I could come up with was that it must have been used to mark the horse derby done 2 weeks ago. I thaught it was odd, and when I marked some of the trails I saw other orange tape, drove over and took it down.
Well low and behold, my wife comes in today and said that someone had messed up her Horse Clubs trail today (Sunday). I said "huh" in my usual, "what the hell are you talkin' about" way. "Apparently" she said, "someone tore down our markers and put up a bunch more in wrong spots, our clubs horse ride was gone down the crapper".
LMFAO :))) I guess it was me! I saw orange tape where I was marking my trails and thaught if was from an old horse derby a few weeks ago.
Turned out they marked their route last week, and I went in there and tore it down and made my own...if that isn't lack of communication in my family I don't know what is. All wasn't lost however, since it was just a club ride, they decided to just romp around, the only reason they marked it was because they don't have a great sence of direction and don't know the woods too well.
Dear God, that would have been awful if I was responsible for making my wife lost in the woods.

Very glad you liked the trails Maxter.

SnowMan...or anyone else>>> I would never take anything you have to say about the derby as a personal attack. Infact I'm right beside you guys yelling.
All I can promise is that it will be different next time if they give into my demands.
And like I said before, "Any time you want to come out to the area and just ride around exploring, I'll be more than happy to take you and show you around".
Also thank you for the invite to go riding TS style Snow man. I will take you up on that offer. And thank you MooseMan, Nacho and Wild Wolverine for coming along on another ride after the derby. We got Bones back up and running...infact I think it engages better than before.
Also I'd like to add to all who didn't get to turn their hands in on time...I also didn't get back on time, and didn't much care if I did. I was more conserned about anyone lost, confused, injured or just not having a good time.
Very nice meeting most of you, and it was nice seeing some familiar faces from last year too.
Thank you for everyone who took pictures of the ride, you all did a fabulous job.

I had great fun in the first mud hole, 20 foot 70 degree hill into mud. The mud hole was bad, not so bad we couldn't make it through a few times if you pick your line. If you hit the holes, well, good luck, lol. There was this hill with water running down it, no one went back there yet. So I went up there, the hill was very soft. I went up, made it about 5 feet. Backed up to solid ground, put the hammer down and made it pretty far this time. Decided to try it again, tried to back up down hill, no go. I had to winch up hill to get out, got out and got turned around, almost getting stuck again. Hammer down, down the hill, lol, and made it out.

That hill was some nasty stuff, worse than the mud holes that i went through all day. Explorer400 ??, the guy with the red 400 Polaris went in there and I had to get get him, more fun.

The water holes at checkpoint 4 was fun, I splashed Optima23 two times really good. lol, that was fun. I splahed mudnut a little, but not enough to get him wet, lol.

The path that run between the two fences to check point 3 was fun, lots of bumps and jumps. I had it up to 100 kmh at one point, Nachoman and few guys riding in my dusty trying to keep up hit the big bumps without seeing them. I hear they got some crazy air, lol.

To bad my shift linkage was out of adjustment and it was popping in and out of gear when under load, so I couldn't ride anymore. No way to adjust it on the trail either.

Can't wait for carberry, I should have my new snorkles ready. Going to try and get two air intakes, cvt intake and cvt exhaust up high.

I thaught it was odd, and when I marked some of the trails I saw other orange tape, drove over and took it down.

hehe, funny stuff. I was in the shilo area riding when there was a snow on the ground, the day some guys were making a bridge at the power line swamp. hehe, that day we met a 2wd honda and a Kawi dirt bike riding in the snow. We seen lots of orange tape that day, I thought it was from last years derby. I'm not sure if its possible to get lost back there, just keep riding the trails and you will find your way out eventually. I would like to ride back there again sometime, more places to see yet.

Those hills by the river are all great. Shilo sits ontop of an underground lake, and water leaks out of the sides of the River Hills making it muddy all the time.

Almost impossible to get lost in the Shilo Spruce Woods.
If you go North you hit the swamp, if you go East you hit the CFB Shilo range fence, go West you hit the tree line trail and open farm feilds, go South and you hit the CFB Shilo pavement.

Well I can honestly say the the four of us had a great time; including Trigger, Nacho, Wild Wolverine and I. After it was over WW and I went back into the bush to help out "F$%^n Bones" who was stuck on a tree stump about 18" high. The stump jammed right up into his quad between the frame. The stump took out his front main drive shaft. Man was he stuck. It took all four of us to physically lift the quad up off the stump. Then was the fun part. Trigger took on a guided tour of his personal trail system. Nice trails Trigger!! Thanks for the after hours tour.
Just an idea but next year what about a GPS rally. NO signs required just GPS marked waypoints. Of course everyone will need to be with someone with a GPS or own one. That would be kind a cool. Once the GPS co-ordinates are marked, then it just a matter of uploading them to the GPS Forum for everyone to download. On the day of the Rally each particicpant could register and follow their own waypoints. For example GPS Waypoint #1 would be the first stop, #2, #3 etc. You get the point (haha). Anyway food for thought. What do ya think?

Trigger the poor start was more than made up for by the meeting of all the trackshare folks and the last 3 hrs that we spent in the swamp! When plans change at the last minute trying to get a hold of land owners by your self is almost impossible. The swamp was a blast,Only had to pull 2 bikes home, next time I will bring a depth finder and mount it on the front rack or a bilge pump lol.

LOL Bobsled, I have a fish finder you can borrow. GLad the swamp made up for the rest of it.

MooseMan, I like that Idea, I thaught about doing something like that earlier, but didn't think it would fly. I wanted to call it "Pathfinder Poker Derby".
Do you guys think something like that would be good?
Only thing is, everyone would have to watchout at intersections and in front for other traffic.

Sorry I had to leave so early but my son is very sick and I am home right now looking after him. I agree with all of the comments made here, I don't know if I will go again to Shilo, it was a long drive for a lot of dust I could get here. Sorry mooseman and nachoman that we didn't go for supper, next derby we will have to do that. The mud holes were fun until I fell in and filled up the chest waders!!! I am going to Piney for sure looking forward to seeing you guys there.
