View Full Version : St Clements closed to ATV's

I heard a rumor that the RM of St. Clements is trying to pass a by law to restrict the travel of ATV's in the ditches and back roads. Anyone hear about this? This would mean ATV's are NOT allowed to travel in the ditches in the RM.
There is supposed to be a meeting on June 10th and if we don't have anyone there to represent us this will pass and then other RM's will follow suit. Andy and Sharon from Sharand ATV Adventures will be there to speak up for ATV'ers but without an organization they can't speak for all of us. This is only 2 weeks away so no time to organize, we need our presents at the meeting.
Anyone and everyone is invited to show up. Don't think it can't happen especially in light of last weekends events.

not completely true. they are putting a commitee together to discuss issues with quaders in general. maybe banning areas such as the village of east selkirk but not the whole area. will keep the boys informed as i find out. will be sitting in on any meetings held

I agree with TRX500, I live by the trailer park on hwy 59, there is never a cop in site to go after all the shit heads on quads and dirt bikes that tear up and down the municiple roads at all times of the day or night, the cops dont care so why the hell should we, go ahead and try and catch me, it will be like the good old days on my Kawasaki KE175. Keep this post positive we dont need any more bad press or comments . They are only restricting the under age youths who are acting up, in high residential areas. But attending the meetings cant hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My friend you dont know me or the way I ride, I ride according to the Laws and rules of the highway traffic act. My point, my simple minded little buddy was that they dont have the man power, the time or the means of policing this, If they did they would do something about all the shit heads I see all week end long racing down the municple roads, tearing across posted private property etc. Also if you are such a great representative to the sport have a look at you track you are leaving behind you as you tear up the ditches and trails.
Anyone one of you, have a look in the ditch as you travel down the highway, the ditches are being torn up, the swamps are being torn up, vegetation is being killed that is home to all kinds of life. it is only a matter of time before all municipalities look at restricting us, In Medicine Hat Alberta you cant ride on ANY public land and almost all private land has been posted to keep out.

I just talked to one of our councilors, they've formed a committee to look at problems in residential areas. High speeds, unregistered quads/dirt bikes, kids with no helmets and trespassing. All problems that we've talked about on this site! We knew it was gonna happen sooner or later.
They realize theres alot of responsible riders out there that consider quading a pastime, sport and our recreation but still have to look into the complaints. Going to a council meeting as an angry mob won't work, they have rules for that and will just dismiss us. With the amount of people we have on Trackshare I think it will be easy to organize a group and do this right:yes:.

Where did country living go? Right out the window. City slickers, weekend warriors, and suburbanites coming to our country living to get themselves all countried up. I say this very "tongue in cheek", but I think there is some merit to it. More and more people are finding that recreational riding is something they are interested in. So more and more are buying machines, tearing it up, having a good ol time, but wrecking sh!t in the process.
Used to was, us country folk used these machines for work first, hunting and fishing second, an might rip up our own mud a couple of times a year for fun. Now we go looking for mud, and tear it up, even if it isn't ours. I am guilty of this myself so I am not pointing fingers.
For the most part, I am becoming aware of it. I try to only ride in water that isn't connected to an major riveway/lake. We have plenty of quarry sandpits available to us. And for the most part, since I've gotten the outlaws, I've learned to use them properly. You go much farther by just turning them in the muskeg that I am in.
We better watch out, ride responsibly or restrictions on these machines will happen. Whether it be modifications or an all out ban, we gotta speak up for the things we like to do. We got some old reeves and councillors making decisions for us.

I agree but aren't the rural communities allowing this to happen from a prosperous point of view? If a successful Derby is held the community stands to profit from it. These same members are allowing everyone to "rip it up" throughout that day. If you want to tag on city slickers who just want to "rip it up" into the equation then I think you should look at what is being presented to them.JMO

Are you serious?? That is RIDICULOUS.
My dad lives in Anola, and about 10 years ago I was house sitting for the weekend & had a motocross race on the Sunday. So, Saturday I was getting my bike ready & went for a ride down the gravel road / thru the ditches & had a lady pull me over in her new SUV. I didn't know what she wanted, so I stopped. She started screaming @ me saying "People don't move out here to hear this crap... people move away from the city to get away from all this noise... etc."
Unfortunately, I was only 18 years old, and still far too polite, so I told her I was sorry & it wouldn't happen again. Mainly because I didn't want to start trouble for my dad etc, but man, if I could only run into her again today.....:knob:

I feel sorry for you boys in Rockwood right now. Big expansions on those bedroom towns and you are getting these extremist folks moving "away from it all" They are only their because housing is ridiculous in the city and they can buy a good sized house and something bigger then a postage stamp of a yard. Then they think everyone should think like them.
I got a buddy that just bought near stonewall. He's from the country. He's excited to build a shop, house, dirt track etc. His neighbor who hasn't even staked out his house yet(empty piece of land) came by to see what he was up to. Noticed the big 4x4 trucks and the shop staked out. Was appalled that this was allowed to happen in the great RM of Rockwood. Then he found out that they were going to have horses! OMG, Horses in the country. He just left swearing. My bud couldn't believe what just happened.
I guess its only a matter of time before St. Clements, Brokenhead, and Rosser run into these same troubles.

I live in a small village just out of Altona. There is a private bike track about 1/4 mile away and at any given Sunday you'll find half a dozen guys ripping it up and making noise, then we have all the tractor noise from all my farming neighbors, then we have the zillion dogs who bark at eachother and at guys going for walks, then we have kids who seem to sit and scream at clouds, and we also have car and truck traffic driving by, the odd air plane buzzing over heads to spray crops..............but you know what pisses me off is those damn LOUD atv's!!!! :-P

Well I hope someone gets the story straight but I worry that there is an alterior motive because correct me if I'm wrong but kids riding down the road at speed, making noise without a drivers liscence or insurance is already against the law.
Why do they need a committy to make a new Bi-law if this is the real problem? Point being, if it is already against the law and that is the real issue then the law enforcement should enforce those laws. Why do they need a new law.
What I'm trying to say is it might be what they (the members of council and the committy) are NOT saying that is the real issue and who knows what there REAL adjenda is?
I doubt we will find out till it is too late and we'll probably take one in the hoop for it....
PS I'm not saying that politics is crooked, I'm just saying that they know how to get what they want. And they don't necessarily have our best interestes in mind.

I don't want to stir the pot but I deal with Manitoba Highways on a daily basis and they are looking at some laws on riding on their property. Ditches are being destroyed and water flow in these ditches are being effected. Last year at a Westside ride they say there was 10k worth of damages to a ditch which was around a newly placed bridge on a municipal road. The ground was not set up yet and hundreds of quads went through it and it all washeddown in tot he creek below.

That happened last fall in my hometown. A city person moved out in the country, and the farmer was out in his field at 8:30 pm trying to finish his field up. The farmer sees the RCMP roll out to his field, and they tell him that they've had a noise complaint and asked if he could shut down. Luckily the farmer was done, but WTF? When the field is ready to be done it's got to be harvested. The goofy part of this story is the farmer is the reeve of the municipality, and of course the city slickers house is right on the trans canada. As more people move out of the city your gonna have problems like this. Quadding, snowmobiling....might have restrictions one day if we're not careful.

Worked at BHPP for a number of years and the one trail that is "torn up" is called the Northern Trail. Yes quads use it, no there are not suppose to. I can confidently say that I've run just about all the trails in that park and the northern trail is the only one rutted/torn up. But the main reason for the "damage" in that area is that it is still being used, and that it's nothing but swamp. The past 2 years, after wind storms, myself and another worker took quads and chainsaws down the trail in order to clear it. There were people on horses trying to go through, but even the horses were sinking up to their bellies, they turned around at that point. Even the groomer hasn't gone through that are for a number years because the trail was impassible. You know it's bad when tracked vehicle can't even make it through.
I do agree, there should be some sort of enforcement project. While most of us would stop (I would like to think) if Police/NRO pulled us over the vast majority of the people your talking about would sooner boot it through the bush and be gone. Hopefully they have a plate and the Officer can get it. Or better yet, don't even bother trying to pull them over, a pair of binos and a good repor with the locals can go a long way in catching those responsible.
