Was at my Dads today and noticed a paper saying "Quad rally near Ste.Rose damages crown land".
There is a article in the Cattle Country news letter/paper, about a farmer. He is complaining about the Laurier poker derby on May 3rd going across his lease land without permission or notication from organizers.
The article is to long for me to type with two fingers but as soon as it is on the MCPA web site I will cut and paste it.
There is also pics of there trail thats cut up which isn't too bad, but he also picked up ALL the trash on his land took pics of the beer and micky bottles which don't look good :nono:. There's about a 24 and 2 whiskey bottles in the pics.
So come on guys take out what you take in, thats the least we could do. Don't need to give them more ammo for there cause.

This is also the same guy ( Bill Murray) that Coca-cola, GWHunter, Mish, Tagalong and myself ran into about half way around the derby. He talked to GWH and didn't sound to happy that we were there.

Shouldnt Bill Murray be worrying about his acting career? loved him in groundhog day...
seriously though he has right to be upset when he has to go pick up trash on his lease land , especially whiskey and beer bottles...giving the police departments even more reason to show up to ALL derbies and shutting alot of derbies down...
Pick up all your trash boys/girls.. I always just throw my cans , dead batteries , slim jim wrappers (lol) back into my cargo box and empty it out when i clean it up later.
I really like the idea of handing out garbage bags at the beginning of regsitration for those to pick up the garbage they have..return your full garbage bags when you return and win a prize for returning with trash...great idea.

That sounds like the fellow I had talked to, he wasn't very pleased that the organizers hadn't approached him before the derby regarding the crown land he leased for his cattle. Unfortunate they hadn't talked to him but just presumed it would be alright, we were following the winter snowmobile trail and they must have presumed it was OK for quads also. As far as the garbage thing goes there is no excuse for people not picking up after themselves, and I won't even get started on the booze thing. Biggest problem is there are lots of responsible ATV'ers out there plagued by a few irresponsible ones, unfortunately we will all pay the price in the end.

Is it just impossible for some people to have fun without booze? I don't really drink much anymore, but even when I did like to tie it on I never drank and rode anything...........ok well when I was like 16, but not as an adult with responsabilities.
The alcohol is what is going to attract the RC's to the derby's and once that happens and they get tired of waiting to grab someone for a liqour charge, they will start looking for other things to nail guys on. The guys who don't wear helmets are insane to begin with, but a $200 ticket would probably jolt the brain as well.
Bad news boys! Anyway I may have that paper at the office and if I do I will scan it.

I don't blame the guy at all for being mad. Unfortunately he probably was yelling at the wrong people. I don't and never will understand the "booze and quadding" thing. Drink later.
This past weekend I attended the Ride For Sight rally in Treherne. Picture dozens of polished, expensive motorcycles all lined up in a gravel parking lot...now picture a "moron" on a quad (unfortunately) coming in, doing donuts and such, spraying gravel on some of the bikes...then taking off.
The comments from some of the owners were colorful and many, alas, 1 comment was...."stupid quadders".

Theres always a handful of people who show up to derbies and give the rest of us a bad name. They are never going to change and start cleaning up after themselves, so people like us have to do it for them. Its not fair but thats just how it is.
The Ar**holes who rip it up with loud pipes at 50mph, dropping beer cans and wrappers everywhere they stop, don't read this site. Especially topics like this one.
Its unfortunate, and it goes against every bone in my body, but we are just going to have to clean up after these people, otherwise none of us will be able to ride.

Andyt makes a great point! When we air our beefs on this site we're preaching to the converted (mostly). How do you get through to the jerks? Personal confrontation isn't the answer. Do we bite our lip and invite more enforcement in? It may have to come to that until something reduces the problem cause just setting a good example won't work with that crowd. Personally, if it comes to loosing my riding priveleges or "dropping a dime" on someone, hand me my loose change.

I am from this area and I agree about picking up your garbage and others garbage on the trail. I also think a drink or two is okay on the trail just not excessive drinking. I would also like to state that the man who leases this so called crown land is a little out of line because of the fact that the trail where it passed threw this piece of land was actually on road allowance and that is open for anyone to travel. I am also apart of the Ochre River Snowmobile Club and the derby followed our regularily groomed trail threw this portion of land and we know have Mr. Murray thinking we should come out and pick the garbage and fix the ruts and we didn't even hold this event. Which makes me believe Mr. Murray is a little unreasonable and should look closer at his own family such as his nephews when it comes to ripped up trails.

I have never known anyone that likes to drink while riding to be able to say "I'll just have one or two". We read frequently about atv accidents where people get killed or hurt and alcohol is involved. Personally I don't think a person can pick & choose which rules they'll follow and which they won't.

ok well this topic is not ALL about drinking on the trails...We are getting off topic again as this seldom happens when it comes to discussing alcohol and riding ATV's , Vehicles , and whatever other motorized transportation you may have. this horse has been beaten to death on this site and by arguing over it and telling ppl the responsible thing to do is....is not gonna change a thing and all this does is bring up debate after debate which has happened over and over on this site. We all know the rights and wrongs , and ppl who do the wrongs make there choice and the ppl who do the right make there choice and all live with whatever if ever consequences they have to after its all said and done.
NOW on the topic , its easy for someone to get upset if at first they ALREADY have an issue with ATVing in general and look for ammo to use against the sport. This fella might have found some ammo and used it..not everyone is a fan of everything...some ppl like LOUD harleys some ppl DONT like them. Some ppl like Snowmobiles , some ppl dont like them. It's just we all have to find away to get along and put up with other ppl's choices.
I do not like loud harleys (hogs) rumbling by my place , but hey they like it so i put up with it , and do not look for ammo to use against them or to get their sport into trouble.
So much depends on the person as well. you get someone who understands communities are trying to make money to upgrade faciliites , like skating rinks for the kids locally who instead will use that and not go throwing bottles or vandalizing the community. but if you are just out atving for the day and go thru some lease land , and tear it up , leave garbage , then the person has a right to be very upset.
Bottom line is there really should of been SOME sort of communication between the derby makers and ALL the people whos land they may have needed to use regardless if its private or leased or crown etc...thats just the proper thing to do.

I agree that all land owners, leasers and what have you should be asked for permission before crossing a piece of land but like you said some people are just out to bash the sport and the Laurier Derby just came across one of those people. If all people start jumping on this band wagon and keep blocking all these road allowances and so on soon there will be know place to ride.

Had a friend attend that derby..she had a blast till she got hurt...quad rolled on her.
When we're out quadding, be it with friends or in a derby, we pick up trash we see and dispose of it properly after the ride...can't get it all, but every little bit helps I guess.

Now that's a super attitude and if we all were doing it the woods would be spotless.
Westman Jeep does much the same, if we stop for a trail meal or refreshment we take out what we brought, but we also open up our garbage bags and have a look for anything else that's around and take it out too just to leave the place a little better than it was when we got there. It does'nt take much and a few hands makes light work of it as you get ready to move on.
And no one can point at our club members and say they leave a mess behind in the woods .... ever.

Wow, that article and those photo's are really damning for sure. Some how we got to get a hold on these things before our sport is completely shut down.
Hitting a professional paper like that will only serve to get all the farmers up in arms against us as a group of unknowns that they would rather not get to know.
Respect for property owners is number one if you like to continue to ride on their lands for sure.
