Hey everyone,, just picked up a Yamaha Tri-Z the other day and have a few questions that i'm trying to find answers to,,, hopefully someone on here can help me out,,, People are telling me that i dont have to use the CLUTCH every time i shift gears,, they said its only when u first start out in 1st gear & or when u come to a stop in gear its use to idle and take off again ,,after 1st gear u dont need the clutch lever n e more ??

what caused the OIL in the tranny to turn GREY after 1 run with new oil in it ??? most engines oil turns Black ,,i had other machines do this too but no one seemed to know ???

Grey is weird. Has the machine been swamped just before you bought it?

First off Welcome to Track Share 85Triz I would use the clutch when shifting threw any gear back when i had my first dirt bike the guy told me only use the cltuch out of 1st then dont bother and i didn't really belive him so i tryed it and it sounded terrible just grinded so i went back to what i was doing which was using the cltuch JMO

not that i know of ,,,,,,,,..... ,, the shift shaft seal leaks + looks like it leaks around the side case gasket ,, soo i top it up with new oil often and what always drips out is Grey , runny oil ,,???

,,,,,,, yaa i figure using the clutch lever would take pressure off the plates when u shift and make the clutches last longer ,, but i dont know ,, YAA i always use the lever and will continue to do so ,,

Keep on changing the oil till it stays one color. (oil is cheap ,engine aren't!)

You shouldn't need the clutch as long as the rpm's are right for a smooth shift. Could water be getting in at the seal that is leaking. Or yes it has had some water in it and you are getting what is left. Welcome to TS

You can shift almost anything out there, dirt bike, car, truck, semi, heavy equipment, without using the clutch, as long as the rpm is just right, thing is, it's almost impossible to do it consistently time after time. Then you get guys that refuse to quit and drop their trannys. It only takes a few bad shifts when the rpms are more then 100 out on those tiny gears in a bike like that and there goes your tranny. I highly suggest using the clutch everytime. As for the grey oil in your tranny, sounds like it was swamped at one point and you're working the dirt out of it. It should go away eventually.

first of welcome to track share.
as for your oil i would have to that it has been swamped or water is getting in some how. change your oil till it quits... JMO
as for shifting gears use the clutch, as vertigo said it can be shifted with ou but you have to have rpm's just right.
a buddy of mine had a tri z it was a very quick bike and is a good looking unit..

i've owned 2 tri-z 250's......
1) track down the guy/gal down that sold you the bike and beat them till you get your money back !!!

2) wait till they get up and beat them again ( your want'a go this when the motor blows up ,and by than they can be anywhere) so do it NOW !!!

3) if by chance you love the bike and think i'm over stating my point.....print this page and save it...your need my name for the " you were right letter"

4) but untill you get to that point...do not over rev that thing, let it idol down to cool, before you shut it off....and same goes for starting ..warm it up good first
and you dont need the clucth from 2 nd on....be a man !

5) just so you know, i'm not bashing you at all..like i said i've owned 2 of them myself.....and bought them for the same reasons you got yours prob'ly
but from one friend to another...revert to step 1)...and 2) if needed

I remember you. The grey oil could be from water or coolant. My guess is it is the water pump seal.

Man please don't ever put those yellow fenders on that black bike. The black ones to me look the best. When you put the seal in be sure to use a little grease on the inside and out side of the seal. The first start up is usually when seals leak from the heat generated by the seal and water pump shaft. I hope we can get together for a ride.:friday::friday:
I love those guys

85TriZ
06-25-2008, 05:20 PM
yaa i planned on making it all yellow again ,,,,,, but i think i'll stick with the Black ,, i find it looks pretty good that way ,,,, Ya that water pump seal is pretty thick ,, i was wondering how to put it in ,, i guess the grease will help it slide in a bit better ,,,

Tecate250

A wheel seal and a watwer pump seal are way different. You never want a leak in a water pump seal. If you could find yellow air shrouds and put the yellow rear on it also would look great. I have seen to many yellow ones.

85TriZ
06-26-2008, 10:11 AM
yaa that water pump seal is like an 1" thick !!!! & has like a double seal ,,,,, Ya i have an extra air shroud ,which is black ,, could paint it yellow to match rear fenders ,,,,,,,, but i also need the Rad scoops too ,,, still waiting for my pump seal to come in ,,, than i gotta order some Swing arm bearings & bushings too ,, there shot !!!!
