Towing a travel Trailer

We are looking at possibly renting a trailer for a week in aug. My questions are : can u tow one of these trailers with the tailgate down? Also. on my 04 gm p/u it has the 7 pin plug, does that mean it has the trailer brake already installed? Last of all, will a 1500 p/u tow a trailer with a rzr in the back of the truck? Will the truck be ok with only a 4.8 and stock suspention?

Most of the wiring is there already, you'd still have to install a trailer brake controller. As for towing with the gate down and a RZR in the back, I guess that would depend on the length of the tongue on the trailer the weight of the trailer, and possibly if you like driving while looking at the sky

Also if you want it I have the GM wiring kit for a trailer brake controller It came with the 05 Silverado I had.

If you tow with your tailgate down, depending on the length of the hitch, turning might be an issue. With the seven pin plug already there all you need is the brake controller. All depends on the size of the trailer your pulling whether or not your 4.8 will be enough. If you get a equalizer hitch with the trailer, it will help with the suspension issue. I also have a 04 Chev with a 5.3 and pull a 26' travel trailer.

Put some air bags on it thats a lot of weight for stock springs and get a brake controler makes stopping a whole lot easier. That little 4.8 will suck gas with all that weight maybe cheaper to fly whatever you choose to do have a safe trip.

In my experience tailgate down on a "bumper pull" travel trailer is almost never possible. Same with pop-ups.

How big of trailer (how much weight)? that 4.8 will pull a lot of trailer... maybe not at 100k+ but at 90k on the flats is another story. So what weight /type of trailer and where you pulling.

A pop-up with little / no frontal area of any size should not be a problem on the prairies.

A 25'+ travel trailer with a big frontal area is another thing altogether though. Some of those 4.8's when properly equiped can be rated in the 8,000 pound range for towing capacity under ideal conditions.

I have the same setup, 04 chev 1500 with a 4.8. The small V8 needs to rev to make power (better above 2500). If you have the 3.73 gears you'll be OK depending on the size of the trailer. with the 3.42 it will struggle a little with hills. we have a 20 fooot travel trailer and if I remember my axle weights correctly, with the RZR in the back we should be borderline legal, but haven't tried it yet. Check your weights at a weigh scale first, because if you have an accident that could bite you on the backside. Long box or short box? We have an 8' box, so I can remove my tailgate, the RZR sits on the box not the gate, but again still have to try it with the trailer. Let me know how you do.

BTW, if your truck has the factory tow package (which it sounds like it does) there will be a connector under the dash where a brake controller will just plug into. Also make sure you have a tranny cooler with that kind of weight.

i usually take my tailgate off when i have the X2 in the box and towing a camper.The rear tires sit on the very back of the box, but i have enough clearance to turn. i also have air bags installed on the truck, i tried doing it once without and it was tooooo bouncy. now my x2 weighs in at 750 lbs dry plus 10 % tongue weight equals alot for a 1/2 ton. the key is having at bare minimum 6 ply tires (no p metric tires LT only), and not looking like your are way maxed out on payload (cops ask less questions). As for a 4.8 pulling all that stay at 90. My hemi gets about 8 mpg, and believe it or not but i get better mileage pulling in northern ontario running hills, than out here pulling against the wind.

ive seen you drive on the hwy, speed wont be an issue, you are never even close to a hundred lol, as for towing and you rzr in the back? not a good idea, i remember how the rzr bent your tail gate the last time, then plus towing a huge trailer, better to just reant a motor home and tow the rzr Tony, the money you save on gas will cover the difference in rental, jmo

I carry my RZR around often while pulling either a car hauler with tractor or my 24ft enclosed and its a good load for my F250.. I even beefed up the suspension front and rear to accommodate the added weight. Either way your going to be way over loaded, everyone is always concerned about power to pull it but don't forget you have to stop that rig..

That said I have seen people do a lot worse :). If you can make it work once I would probably do it. If it's a rig you will use often I would be looking at other options.

Also, each trailer has a different tongue length so you will have to measure to be sure. I had to extend my tongue on my enclosed trailer for it to work.

he's got a 1500, personally i wouldn't recommend it but he's like me when i was a kid. can't tell him nothing..........

You will never get a proper answer on your question without having the information on the trailer. Lenght. Trailer weight. And tonge weight. If you got a 4000lbs 25 ft ultralight with 400 lbs tong weight. Throw a sway control on and giver. If you got a 33ft 9000lbs 850 lbs like mine then you cannot pull it.

You would need the brake controler. Easy to put in on there. 20 minuts with the adapter plug.

Tail gate down. Usualy not but some can. Have to hook it up and check clearance both straight and full turning.

apreciate all the help everyone still not sure what route were gunna take. sure wish they didnt write off my 02 with the 8 foot box... but sure like this truck better. Still have 38 days to decide.

Throw the razr in the box and buy a good tent its a lot easier I do it all the time

I have air bags in my F-150 and I will NEVER have another half ton without putting air bags. Just remember air bags are NOT increasing the legal payload of the truck, you are just making it carry the weight more evenly across the front and rear axles. If a hald ton is loaded and sitting really low in the back you are more likely to get the D.O.T looking at you funny, if the truck is ridding level they don't care how much you have on it. Unless you have 1 ton then you get looked at all the time especially going west through headingley
