How Big of a Winch ??

How big of a winch do I need to pull a 1200lb boat on a dolly and rail system up a roughly 40 degree grade ?? Can I get away with the 110v 1000lb electric from P.A. ??

Too old to hand crank anymore !!!! Have to take a break half way through nowadays !! LOL !!!

If you use a snatch block you can double the pulling capacity of any winch. You might want to consider that application when sizing your winch requirements.

Dude, I've been hand cranking it for years. Remember, it's not a dead drag.......the dolly is on wheels that ride on the rails.

I can sell you a viper winch, it comes with a snatch block as well so you make the job much easier on you and the winch. A 2000 lbs winch will be plenty with a snatch block. I'll send you a PM on a price.

we have a set up not too diff. than what you have and a 1,000 pound winch works OK but if we were to do it again we would go bigger.

2 big points to remember is brake to hold it from going back. Brake on a lot of winches suck.
AND
the last wrap on the winch is not going to be 1,000 pounds. First wrap is the 1,000 pound pull area so..... cut as much of the cable off the spool that you can. Only have on the winch spool the length you need and not much extra. less rope/wire on the spool = max pulling power.

very generally speaking if first wrap = 1000 pounds then if all the cable / rope on the spool then only 45 percent pulling power available. Each winch slightly different of course. An empty spool has more pulling power.

Thats a pretty neat setup.. I would think if your cranking it by hand a 1000lb 110v winch would work and would probably be easiest if you have power at the lift or can run an extension cord. I would only leave the necessary cable on the spool so you get the most pulling power possible.

You should get a Viper Elite I think it is that has the wireless remote. When you pull up on the boat you can just winch it up

I don't think that's enough winch. 1200 lbs on a 40 degree grade would exert around 500 lbs from gravity alone, plus friction and starting stiction. A winch rated at 1000 lbs typically means it pulls 1000lbs on the first coil of the spool. The more line you wind on, the more the leverage of the larger diameter of the coil works against it, so it seldom operates at optimal rated pull. 1000lb winch would likely be marginal.

I would get a bigger winch rather than dealing snatch block. The block will double the time it takes to get your boat up.
