You have to know your skills and match them to the circumstances. I was sitting in a tree stand and saw a nice doe walking out from the bush line. I had a place to rest my rifle and I waited until she walked through the deep snow far enough that she was crossing the beaten path. As she crossed the path, I whistled. She froze in her tracks and kept her head up. It was an easy neck shot at 50 yards and the 300WM tore a hole in her neck the size of a golf ball. She dropped right on the spot and probably didn't feel a thing. Given the same circumstances, I would do it exactly the same way.

I for one will never shoot for the head, as I have seen too many times a deer running around with it's jaw blown off, neck shots no thanks...Although i have in the past shot them in these areas as it was the only shot I had, but made sure I placed it well..I like the lung heart shot for me..or as we call it the boiler room, that's my preference...

When you shoot a deer in the neck the neck breaks deer is dead nothing wrong with it most guys wont attempt it because there poor shots but the neck offers a bigger target then heart or lung shots

Vitals for me. I grew up being taught to shoot vitals and am now teaching my kids the same. Daughter's first deer 2 years ago..heart shot, dropped on the spot...one proud dad and one excited girl. Her shot this year was a double lunger ,buck only went 20 yards. Would never go for a head shot, not sure I would take a neck shot.

I`ve always aimed for the vitals heart and lung shot, Once did i aim for the spine and felt like crap doing so. But it was muzzle season, later evening saw a buck, did not want to lose it so took the spine shot as it seemed further away. Sure he dropped like a bag of nails but like said earlier they still try to escape with there front legs. To me that doesnt feel like a humane kill. Therefore i normaly aim for the vitals.

Uum......No.....Most guys don't take them because they know that in most situations the better, higher percentage shot is the heart/lungs.
I don't know what kind of deer you are talking about but any deer I've ever seen, the neck is nowhere near as big as the chest cavity.

I saw a neck shot with a 223, and can't say for sure what kind of ammo he used, but the results where poor. He hit the spine but it didn't have enough power to kill the deer.

I've also shot through the heart of a buck and had him jump a fence and go about 75 feet. Blood trail like a paint brush and I even heard him cry out. I don't know how I could have done better with the shot.

I always aim for the vitals, I would feel sooo bad if I aimed for the head and made a mess of the animal and it survived only to suffer a slow and painful death.

My first dear was killed with a compound bow and it was in fact a spine shot, but not on purpose, the big bastard just walked almost right under my stand and thats where my very first arrow I ever shot at an animal went. It was nice though, it dropped on the spot and I climbed down and put a second arrow into the vitals to put it down.

Vitals all the way!

Always the vitals and with a bullet that will ensure pass through so there will be a blood trail. You don't get the "swallowed a grenade" effect and dramatic drop that often comes from using a lighter, faster bullet, but you don't lose the odd one that runs away without a blood trail, either.

When I was much younger I went through phase when I made head/neck shots, but quit when I saw that, occasionally, these shots could leave an animal badly hurt but left to die a slow death. As was said earlier, jaw shot off or passthrough of neck without hitting spine or artery
