Code Reader

Recently bought a 2012 Ram 1500 and tried hooking up my code reader too it. The reader just sits there and says linking, but never goes past that. Anyone have any idea what's going on. The reader works fine on my '99 Dakota. (Anyone wanna buy a '99 Dakota 4x4) Not sure why it won't connect.

Dypends how new your reader is as there was obd readers and then obd2 readers but not sure what year they changed. There are also different protocols for each make so your might not have updated ones for dodge.

Is your code reader CAN compatible? Probably not, the old stuff was indeed OBD2, but the newer stuff uses a CAN-bus communications network, and the old scanners can't read that. If you buy a new code reader, make sure it says OBD2/CAN compatible.

Nope, not CAN compatible, just OBD2. Thanks for the info, I'll have to look for a new one.
