Moving to Alberta???

Hello all,

Looking for advice. I have the opportunity to move out west near Edmonton. I would be moving from St. Malo to NE of Edmonton around 35min. I'm looking for the good the bad and the ugly. Pros and Cons vs Manitoba. I assume some on here have moved out that way as well and could maybe save me some headaches of not only the move but maybe the things to expect. As a sidebar would also like to hear what kind of riding is available in the Fort Sask. area. The area looks really nice from a car at 100km. Never did get a chance to spend too much time there yet.

Thanks for all your input.

Health care: when you move you must rgister and beware that there maybe a phase in period before you get coverage. Would not want to get caught in limbo between MB / AB and have you and your family without coverage.

the obvious is that you'll make way more money, the down side is everything is so damn expensive its just like getting paid your normal wage here. awesome scenery and riding either it be atv or snowmobile.

pizalm will become famous soon enough
There's not much for boating/watersports there compared to here, on the other hand the rockies are right there. Money wise rent was the only thing I noticed that was way more than here.

Buying a house would be more expensive and they have private car insurance and believe it's ten times worse than MPI. However it's not that much more expensive than Manitoba as you don't have PST only GST. Income tax is lower at least it was for me when I was working construction and there is certainly some beautiful scenery and nice rolling hills which we don't have much of here till you get to St. Leon or Riding Mountain. lol What kind of work are you doing out there?

I lived in Edmonton for a few years and very much enjoyed it there. The insurance is private, and I found it better than MPI. At least you can shop the price around to a few different places. Insurance on my truck at the time was less than MPI.

Scenery was great, and there are still a few good places to take a boat out that aren't really that far. People were friendly, Edmonton was a nice city. Income tax was definitley lower.

Rent was more, but not by much. Food, entertainment, etc, all seemed pretty close to the same as here. I think it only gets alot more expensive up around Fort McMurray area.

Honestly, I can't really remember anything bad about living out there. At least you won't be in the muder/violent crime capitol of Canada anymore, LOL

The only thing that is more expensive is housing, and it's not that much more considering how retarded real estate has become here. Fuel, insurance, groceries etc is the same or less than here. Taxes are way less. Anyone that thinks that you won't earn more take home pay (a LOT more) never worked there. I'd go back in a heartbeat if my family would move. Got tired of commuting so here I am.....

Made the move 6 yrs ago, was going there to make a buck and come back to buy a house. Well ended up liking it here and never looked back. Like HRL said, if you never worked here, your only listening to the typical fort mac horror stories. Rent can be more expensive, and housing is only marginally. No PST, lower personal income tax, lots of work, good wages, slightly warmer winters, and slightly cooler summers. Try it for yourself and see if Alberta fits your lifestyle, or if you can fit Albertas lifestyle.

my was flying back and forth from alberta for a few years working on the rigs. like everyone said, just kinda stay away from fort crack. lots of drugies and insane people. my bro has also told me about guys who drive there trucks from home to work. example. say i drove out there from here and had manitoba plates on my truck. lots of the people up there like to smash up peoples vehicles who dont have alberta plates. this was a few years ago. i dont know about now.
