This is how I was told and what I follow, not sure if it's right. I pour in the bleach and then run some taps until I smell bleach, usually the outside ones so as not to put too much bleach into the septic. Once I smell bleach I run every other tap in the house for about 30 seconds to get bleach in all the lines. Then I let sit for at least 24 hours. I start to flush the system by once again running the outside taps to avoid putting bleach into the septic. Once it seems clean I run the rest of the taps again for around 30-60 seconds. I've had to on occasion drain the hot water tank as well.

Not sure if this is the proper way to do it but it's what I do and seems to work. Hope this helps.

yep, pretty much...except we never left it for 24 hours (usually just 4) and we ran all the taps at the same time until we smelled the bleach

Do you have chlorine pellets for a well? How deep is the well?? Do you have a rust eliminator or a salt softener? I dissolve my pellets first before adding to the well, just putting them in takes too long to dissolve and you smell the chlorine for a long time... I leave it overnight, by pass the rust buster and water softener, turn the taps till I smell the chlorine and let it sit for as long as I can, this cleans the pipes out. Then run the taps till the chlorine smell is gone and viola... Should be done once a month.

What I like to do is similar but I I run the garden hose back into the well and let in run to create a closed loop and let that run for 4 hours then, after open all tapes then drain system.

Also if you have any aerators on your faucets it is a good idea to replace them. I have seen where a well has been shocked and still show small amounts of coliform when a water sample has been tested. In the end well was fine but aerator was still contaminated.

Have you had your water tested ?

How have you arrived at the decision to shock your well ?

The methods posted above will do the job, but perhaps a step back might uncover some detail that ay indicate that you have other problems.

Had the water tested. All good. Just looking to get rid of the slight rotten egg smell smell in the taps.

mkj022 is on a distinguished road
rotten egg smell comes from the hot water tank ,replace the anoide rod or remove it all together and replace it with a plug ,that should clear it up
