We used Lexan for stuff, easier to cut. Check with any glass shop, they carry all that stuff.

if you want the stuff that will take alickin and keep on tickin...get acrylic ....not just plasitc glass.. Sales name best known Lexan or Plexiglass by trade. plastic will take a lickin but will just crack if enough hits.
I would not bother with anything thinner than 1/4" especially if you have no backing...1/2" is best..but expensive.
