The battery was replaced at the beginning of the season, it reads 12.5 volts right now, when the machine did run, it measured 13.???

i pulled the rebuilt starter out, put in a new starter fresh off the shelf from Royal Dist. and found an old solenoid I replaced last time the starter needed a rebuild, I put it on and I have power back in the pod. I still only get a click when trying to start it, but running jumper cables from the battery to the starter, it will start the machine. If I put a charger with a boost setting on it and i get 13.7 volts (I think) and it still just clicks.

i'm assuming a NEW solenoid is needed, what do you guys think?

All this bull$hit just 2 days before it gets loaded for our final race, AND one of the girls from Go Riding TV/Magazine is supposed to race it for their tv show

sounds like a bad connection allowing for a major voltage drop across the affected area. simplest way for you would be moving your booster cable up the line to the next point which could be the power out side of solenoid. If starter turns over then cable is good. move to other side of solenoid with booster cable and use your starter button. If that is a no go, use a jumper wire to solenoid signal wire and see if it goes then. That should get you on the right path to figure out if cables or solenoid are at fault. you should find your problem within fifteen min I would say. most stuff is pretty accessible on that quad. Dont forget to check your grounds as well. But corrosion usually affects power side.

Check your connections on your machine, have a good look at the negative connections from the battery to the frame and motor assembly where the starter makes the negative connection.

Do a voltage drop test, with a digital volt meter. This is a great way to find a poor electrical carnation. Place one end of the meter prob on the battery negative post and the other on the case of the starter. Try and start the unit, your will see the voltage drop on the meter of the negative connection. Should be .05 to .5 volts max, if you see battery voltage or 6,8 volts you will know you have a poor connection on the negative side of the circuit.

One more test to perform, if the positive and negative circuits have .05 to .5 volts or less loss in the circuit. Do a current draw on the starter circuit with an amp clamp. See what the amperage draw is on the starter trying to turn the motor over. If you see 150 amps plus with no movement of the engine. I would then make sure the motor if not jamming or worse. I'm sure this is not the case as you look after your equipment. But assume nothing when trouble shoot a problem. Good luck as I will be watching for you on Go Ridding, I seen your machine with Rick Murcer on it

I really should take a basic elictrical course to learn how to read a meter, I'll clean and sand all contacts tonight, check ground connection on frame and see what happens. Its a ***** to pull start, I almost ripped my arm off the other day hahaha.

Even though you have put a new battery in, it can still get a bad cell from impact and bouncing around. Current is your friend, voltage means nothing without it. If by some miracle you have an amp clamp that will actually measure DC current, it would sure be a quick way to check things out. A good one aint cheap, borrow if you can find one. It takes 2 minutes to undo your battery and try boosting from your truck or car. If you leave the battery attached and it has a bad cell, it will take all the current you give it and see it as a short and steal all of it instead of sending it to your starter/solenoid.

Okay, I am up and running.

first,THANK YOU to everyone that offered up suggestions, using a meter in any way shape or form is not really an option, I dont know how to do anything more than check continuity with one of those. I dont have a power light, but will get one soon, and I dont have an amp clamp.

QUADNUT, I tried your suggestion tonight, first I cleaned all contacts except at the solenoid and still just had the click. Next I put a jumper cable from the positiveterminal to the solenoid and sure as $hit, the SOB started right up. I cleaned and sanded the end of the red cable making that connection at the solenoid and am up and running!

I know now to check the simple things first, and know way more things to check next time, so again, THANKS Trackshare!!!

Your welcome Paul. Sometimes keeping things simple and trying a different approach is easiest if your not familiar with multi meters and other electrical diagnostic equipment.
