Generator

Looking for a generator for the house since we were out of power since yesterday at 2pm and it came back on at 7 tonight...

Looking for 5000-5600w with electric start preferably but not needed and needs to be quiet. Love to get a yamaha but can't justify the price since i will be using it for when power goes out.

Any advice on what kind to buy in Canada or US

Here is a link to an easy way to connect a generator, if it's available in your area. On this website is also a link to a list of generators which will work to power the house or yard.

I was 27 hours without power at my house, most are still out in my area my cottage is going on 48
This is what I am looking at

If the Generlink will work on my 400 amp at the cottage I would seriously consider that type of transfer switch to hook my Honda to

My generator is too small to run the whole house, so here is what I had my electrician do as I was building my addition. He put 2 male connectors in my garage to plug the 2 outlets on my Yamaha into, one goes to the furnace which now has a switch to choose power supply and one to a plug by the furnace which is in the middle of the house(trailer). This way I won't freeze and I don't have to run a cord in.

You could wire your furnace in to just a cord wrapped up beside it and a similar/proper switch, then you would just have to run a cord in.

Edit: I guess that only works for people with gas furnaces, sorry I forget a lot of MB places are electric heat.

what I did was take a #8 cable put a male clothes dryer end on and then the plug for the generator(25amp), shut off main on panel and shed any unneeded circuits or to large circuits, and allow the generator to back power the system.

If that is your only use I would get something cheap.. it will bring more fuel and be loud but it's only used in an emergency.

If you want quite you will pay big bucks.. i.e. yamaha, honda.

Costco has Champion generators, also check Kijiji sometimes some good hondas come up for a good price.

I bought a cheaper one, that was the first one, about 4 hrs of use and it did not generate. So the next one I purchased was a Yamaha EF3000ISE, but it doesn't have the 240v output. If I was to buy another, I would make sure it has the 120/240v option on it.

Just remember, the cheap price is long forgotten, after the poor quality remains.....lol........

On this list is suggestions of ones to purchase.

I ran my house one of those costco ones like this while the power was out here thurday-friday. http://www.costco.ca/Champion%C2%AD%....10315050.html mine was the 6000w thought.. they work pretty good but are loud as he!! I was able to run whole house. fridge, frezzer, lights, and a heater in our main area to keep us warm. Even had TV's and laptops going. Was also able to run our water preasure system and septic tank pump but i'd have to kill the heater to tun those pumps or the breaker would kick. No big deal. if we needed water just shut heater off for a minute.. I'd probably would not have needed to do that but i was only running off the 15A side of generator. if i had the plug for the 30a side it may have took the whole load. If i had the plug for the 240v side i would have ran the furnace once and a while.

Good generators for things like this or building a house non commercially if you want to take it camping forget it.. to loud and too big.. costco has the 3000w as well and is much more quite but still loud compard to the honda's and not as much power.

yep u pay for quiet and quality. If you dont mine the long drumming and humming and high gas usage...buy cheap...but after all if it is for the one offs then go for it.

With regards to the Northern Tool one...becareful if buying a propane or nat gas unit. It will have to be kept warm to work excellent. May experience problems if only run cold and Natural Gas. Best to have a dual fuel unit.

I have one of those costco. champion generators the 3500/3000 watt kind. I have never had to use it for my house but used it all weekend for the trailer at our new property for lights and furnace, filled it up and started it at 5.00pm saturday and it was still running sunday at 9.00am when i shut it off. Was impressed on how long I got on a tank of fuel but it is loud. I think when I bought it it was around $299.00,

X2 on champion I bought one from Canadian tire. Tank of fuel runs a long time. Fairly quiet for a cheaper model generator. YouTube has a bunch of reviews of the cheap and high end generators. One thing that I learnt is to use the fuel shut off and let the carb clear of most of the fuel prior to shutting down. Makes starting much easier if the generator sits for long periods. The Honda Ecu generators don't have a fuel shut off and this causes some issues according to the reviews I've seen.
