Portable Shelters

Thinking of getting one (12x20x8). Anybody have one of these? Pros/Cons resistance to wind, best place to buy etc.
Thanx.

I bought the bigger one from CT for 449. it's 13 x 20 x 12. the roof has a good slant to it. will see how it holds up this winter. My neighbor in woodridge has one like your picture. He is leaving his up too. I may spray mine with silicon or pledge just to have a slippery surface for snow.

I was originally gonna get one for my boat but after at a few of them and hearing what people had to say about them, I decided to add a lean-to on my shed. It's a tent and will always be just a tent. And you technically still need a building permit to set one up in your yard. If you must go with a tent, go with a "cover all" tent, pretty sure they sell them in Headingly

in Quebec City and surrounding area almost 100% of all households use these in the winters. They use them to cover sidewalks and driveways even if they park inside garages. It helps keep the 3m + of wet / heavy snow off areas that need shoveling.

Adequate anchoring and wide strapping seems to be the key.

That's my only worry is the wind and besides, you can't really "lock" a tent!

I have had Shelterlogic 12x20x8 from CT for more than 4 years now. I replaced the cover this fall cuz it was toast. Buy the 30 inch anchors for the corners and use the 15's that come with it on the center poles and it won't go anywhere. I am going to put a tarp over it to prevent sun damage....should last a long time, and then just replace tarp for a fraction of new cover cost($200)

I'm sheltered somewhat from straight east and west, but anything else hits it.......the only real shelter is inside

Just helped a friend put a 8 x 10x20 up today. It was on sale at Canadian tire for 249$ Wasn't too bad lotta poles to put together but seemed pretty decent unit. Keeps his toys outta the elements anyhow We'll see how it holds up.

I used to be a dealer for Cover-it out of the US. If you can find one of these shelters you will be quite happy. I have had my original standing for 19 years! The lifespan on the cover was 20 years in our literature, showing some wear on the cover where the ribs are. The key to longevity is keeping the cover taut. To do this we used to tie a rope at the mid-point inside and cinch it tight to bring the frame together, then tighten the cover over the frame. When the cover is secure, release the rope which then allows the frame to expand and tighten the cover some more. It should be tight but not stressed, you only need to pull the frame in about a foot.
Unfortunately, I got out of the business about 15 years too soon because these shelters are quite common now.
I have tried the CT brand once in a pinch I bought a fairly new unit off Kijiji, It only lasted a year because it only had 5 ribs, 1 every 5 feet on a 20 footer if you can find an extra rib from one that has been damaged you will be quite surprised how much more snow loading it can take.
My 2 cents....
