I put a 7500 watt baseboard heater in my garage on a thermostate and I just keep it at 5 C unless I work in the garage and it heats up fast when I turn it up. The cost is minimal and all you need is a 30 amp breaker.

heat
How big is the garage? 2x4 or 2x6? Insulated door(s)? If you don't plan on heating a garage all winter, don't count on a construction heater to heat your garage in a few hours. Your best bet might be to spend the extra money & get a wood stove set up. It will heat up in no time & dry up the air (especially if you have a wet toy or car). You may want to wire a couple of ceiling fans & lights(COMBO) to the ceiling for extra light & air circulation as my friend did.

500 to 800 bones will get you a small electric furnace, horizontal mount it on the ceiling. Forced air heats fast and hold a temp well.
Also lends itself to an ac installation for another 700 bucks ! |

I'm gonna be using 2 commercial grade 5kw unit heaters. Anywhere between $200-400. bones each. 30amp breaker with 10/2 wire for each one. Done this before where I placed one on the wall facing the door and the other on the opposite side facing the other way. Use these with a ceiling fan and they work awesome. I've also put in a 100amp sub in the garage.

I've been using a 4800w construction heater for 15 years with no problem, but you need a 220v plug in.I use my welder circuit. Those heaters are only around a hundred bucks, very economical.Built-in thermostat.

If you search or garage heat there are tons of threads on this on TrackShare.. There always seems to be 1 or 2 homes burn down each year from construction heaters.. make sure you get a proper unit heater or electric furnace with proper safety features. Like mentioned above anywhere from 200-600 for a good one.

have a construction heater in my garage, sure it was nice last year, but we also had a wicked winter. Im considering putting in a woodstove, for the amount of times i work in there a wood stove would be nice, its just the damn pipes, and insurance.

My garage has a woodstove that was in it when we bought the place, but the chimney isn't certified. So until I get around to changing it out, I've been using a propane construction heater. It's the 15000-80000 btu model and warms it up suprisingly fast. If it's just for when you are going to work in there once in a while, it's not a bad option.

interesting.I wonder how much amperage they need,it may only be a little to run the auger or whatever. In that case,I suppose a battery and inverter setup could be rigged for power failures...after seeing what happened in sandilands last week I think we should all be ready for the day when a big ice storm takes out hydro's main towers.

I saw this at Princess Auto. Looks interesting and only draws 3 Amps, but certainly wouldn't heat your whole house. Price seems a little steep too. |

I too use a construction heater all winter. I keep it just above zero for the wifes car....barely runs...then when I am in the garage I turn it up a bit. Mostly at 10degrees or so is tshirt weather in my garage. I have infloor piping...but have not hooked it up yet. Going the route of a High output electric miniboiler commercial with a closed loop glycol water mix.
