Sort of on topic but I did get pulled over in my RZR on #1 while crossing an intersection.. I had a buddy with me and we were not wearing helmets however we were buckled in. He asked if we had helmets and I said not we are wearing seat belts and have a certified roll cage, his response was OK have a nice day.
I am sure that if we were ridding two up on a quad with helmets we would have been ticketed.

Brutal!!.....Motorcycle...2 wheels...avg, speeds of 70-110KM....riding double all the time..in heavy traffic.
ATV with a good 2-up....4 wheels.... AVG speeds 20 - 50Km...when riding double....in light traffic...and they are giving out tickets. I hope they are using their discretion ie; reckless driving and excessive speed. |

Have never heard of anyone getting a ticket, or being stopped for that matter. Have been to almost all the derbies, have gone past the RCMP when they were out and never been stopped. I have not ridden without a passenger in years. Riding double is somewhat scary on a single up machine. With a passenger sitting behind the center line of the rear wheels about the only thing the machine does is wheelie, or understeer.

Overhang?
My wife and I regularly ride double on our Can Am 2-up. We have been stopped twice; once on the ice and once on a logging trail. No tickets but one constable actually took out a tape and measured the wheel base, commented on the extra inches and sent us on our way! My observation with 2-up is how much more stable the whole rig is when climbing steep grades.

I guess a lot has to do with the balance of the machine as well. Years ago I had a double rider on a Big Red while moose hunting....the front end was all over the place. Not sure on how it would be on a 4x2 as the front end is also fairly light. I have a 660 Griz and riding double or losing control because of a passinger has never been an issue.

Hey Bister, does your dog have "Doggles" on when riding?
![]() I bought a pair in Osh Kosh for my "rider", a large poodle and she wears them on the ATV and the boat! |

Here is a statement right out of the off road vehicle act.
so if designed to be a two seater your good to go. So even on a sled you could be ticketed. Passengers on an off-road vehicle 27 No person shall operate an off-road vehicle while carrying more persons than the number for which the off-road vehicle was designed. Helmets required 28(1) No person shall ride on or operate an off-road vehicle unless the person is wearing on his or her head a properly adjusted and securely fastened helmet in compliance with the requirements contained in the regulations under this Act. Where helmets not required 28(2) Subsection (1) does not apply (a) to a person operating an off-road vehicle being used in the course of farming, commercial fishing, hunting or trapping operations; or (b) to the operator or passengers of an off-road vehicle equipped with occupant roll-over protection and seat belt assemblies that meet the safety standards prescribed in the regulations and the seat belt assemblies are being worn in a properly adjusted and securely fashioned manner. Occupant roll-over protection 28(3) For the purposes of subsection (2), "occupant roll-over protection" means a cab or frame that is capable of supporting an off-road vehicle in an overturned position. Seat belt required 29(1) Every operator of and passenger in an off-road vehicle which is being operated in accordance with the provisions of this Act and in which a seat belt assembly is provided, shall wear a complete seat belt assembly in a properly adjusted and securely fastened manner. Prohibition of removal of seat belt 29(2) No person shall remove from an off-road vehicle a seat belt, or any part thereof, that was installed by the manufacturer, except to replace broken or worn seat belts or parts thereof.

Yep. I carry them with us and only put them on if it is raining or she is getting hit with snow from the tracks. She won't walk with them on, she pulls them off, but she knows they help when riding. Without them on in the rain she try's to duck down behind me, put them on and she stands on the arm rest again.

Have only heard stories about this happening, whether true or not, who knows. At St.Jean Derek actually asked an RCMP if he was going to be ticketing for riding two up on a single rider machine, NO was the answer, Im looking for rider without helmets. He added that he would ticket two up riding if they were driving imprudently or dangerously(flat out or doing wheelies I assume is what was meant by that). I am sure there is an officer or two out there that will ticket especially to fill quotas for the month. We also sell many "cargo boxes" with seats, so far people are not putting much merit in the rumours...
