Bore sighting?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good place to get my .30-06 bore sighted? I got it done at Ernie's before and they did a fantastic job. I just find getting the new scope bore sighted first makes for a much quicker finer sighting job before the season. What do places charge for this nowadays?

Lorne

might be cheaper in the long, but pick up a boresite at your local sporting goods store. lots of good ones out there to chose from. try at cabelas or wholesale sports. they should be able to help u out.

boresighters are not that bad, i bought one a few years back. 59.99$, Used it coutless times, im sure its paid it self if i were to pay to get a gun boresighted.
Worth looking at purchasing one if you do it often enough! just an opinion.

Bushnell magnetic boresighters are cheap and they are good enough for the average joe. I rarely use my laser boresighter as the bushnell works good enough.

That's the thing, I wouldn't be using it very often at all. I haven't hunted in about 10 years at this point and it's not like I'll be swapping scopes on even an irregular basis. I have my favourite gun, Remington gamemaster .30-06 pump and don't see myself acquiring another rifle any time soon. Will probably just do it the old fashioned way.

I remove the bolt and place the gun on a rest, look through the bore at a distant object and adjust the scope to coincide. Use a vertical object at first, to get the left and right correct, or only use a vertical object as the left and right is about all you can adjust properly initially.

one shot

I set my target at 30 yards and fire one shot at it, using my shooting rests off a solid bench. Next, I resight my rifle so it is sitting solidly on the bullseye, then without moving the rifle, I adjust scope so sights are on the bullet hole. This puts me about 3 inches high at 100 yards and good for most conditions. In recent years I changed to about 1.5 inches high because I hunt areas where most shots are less than 200 yards, so I drop 6 clicks.

One shot alignment.

..and if you really want to burn up some ammo... you could do it in TWO shots !!
Nothing takes the place however of putting a few rounds downrange at the actual distance you intend on hunting at just to verify your settings.

Well, looks like I'll be going the Cabela's route. Have no idea where I put my Bushnell scope and Remington sling that I took off the rifle years ago (long story involving registration etc.), so looks like I'll be mounting my old Leupold scope back on but need rings. Just called Cabela's and they don't charge for the scope mounting and bore sighting and I figured that is as good a place as any to go buy some new rings. Then I'll try the two shot sighting in that video when I get out to the lake.

Thanks for all the info, and special thanks to Pokee for his offer!

I don't like someone else mounting the scope for me, because the position of the scope for eye relief is very individual. Will Cabelas let you shoulder the rifle and see if you like the way they set it up? Be sure to try it at both extremes of magnification. It's usually more critical at high magnification. You want to be able to shoulder the rifle naturally and have a clear view.
