Gun license

Hello All,

Well I really didnt think that i would ever be asking this question but since the riding enviroment changes a little i think it s a good idea.Whats all involved in getting a gun license? Now I have no certificates or anything. What kind of training am I looking at and what amount of financial input. Due to the fact I'll be riding more in the mountains here and there is more "wildlife" probably there is a part of me that wants to have access to a firearm when out that far in the middle of nowhere. Some questions I have.
Do I need a gun?
What permits do I need to own one.
What's the cost of a decent gun. Not for hunting but merely as a self protection type of deal.
What training should I be taking?
Are the permits etc the same in all provinces or are they specific to each.

Just so we all know where i stand. I have never owned a gun. Shot high power and shot gun a hand full of times. Don't think I'll ever be an avid hunter. Just not my thing really. However, having the peace of mind I think might be worth the trouble. What are your thoughts?

Firearms License

If i'm not mistaken you need to pass the Canadian Firearms Saftey Course then apply for your Possesion and Aquisition Licence (PAL). The safety course costs I belive are around 80 bucks. I don't think they charge you anything for your PAL. Once you have those two documents you can go out and buy a gun. If you just want a gun for the wild critters over there in the west you can get a nice short 12 guage with some good shot and it would be enough to deter the critter.

Not exactly positive on what i heard yesterday, so don't want to make rumors. I'm sure someone else more into the gun thing on here may know something more than I. It's probably nothing at all, but I, as usual, have always been a skeptic on the whole trashing gun registry thing.....always said it will never really be done with, but was laughed at before, so don't want a repeat of that...hahaha.

Good answer. Also, I would suggest doing this before the move if possible as it may be easier doing so where you have lived for a while. (references, etc)

Ok, just to bring this back on topic, you'll need to take a Canadian Firearm Safety course like already stated, then you can apply for a posession/aquisition license (PAL). Don't worry about getting a restricted license as you won't be able to carry a handgun while out in the wild.

Once you have your PAL, I'd look at a good 12 gauge. A model 870 Remington is a pretty good bang for the buck 12 gauge. Pick yourself up a box of slugs and that'll take care of any critter that may be threatening you.

Unless you want to hunt, you don't even need the hunters safety course, just the canadian firearms safety course. Check here for your application, print it off and fill it out:
