Belair Riding

How would Belair be for someone who hasn't ridden out there before? Just looking to explore some new trails.
Would be going in a group of about 4 or so, and would just be sticking to trails, nothing crazy.
Is there a map of trails we could get our hands on? and would there be enough cell service to check maps on a phone while we're out there?
Thanks!

You can stage at the beginning of the North Star trail head on Hwy 304 directly across from the road going into Stead. We have several hundred km's of trails in the Belait Forest. Here is a generalized map of all the trails in the region.

I'd recommend bringing a gps and mapping your route. There a so many trails in there, its easy to get confused.

If you use Google Maps on an iPhone you can download the maps of the area in advance so even if you have no service you can still see where you are and which direction to head.

I use an app called RonKeeper which tracks where you have been so it's very easy to backtrack if you do get lost, plus you can see what you still need to explore in the future if you use it on every ride. There's an export feature so I load all my rides into Google Earth and can see all the trails I have been on in the past.

Have fun and be safe.

Thanks

You can go onto Google Earth on your computer and zoom in real large and you can easily see all the ATV trails. Use the draw path tool in Google Earth and trace all the hundreds of km's of trails which you can save as a .KMZ file. You can convert the .KMZ file to a .GPX and then load the .GPX file onto your Garmin rather than aimlessly driving around trying to map the trails in a piece meal fashion. I did the .KMZ trail mapping of all the trails and it works great. I have every trail on my GPS unit.

You can also use a software tool called GPX2IMG application to convert the .GPX file to a Garmin .IMG file that the application will automatically load into Garmin Map Source as a map layer which you can transfer to your Garmin through your Map Source app or Basecamp. The installed file on your Garmin will be a transparent layer of all the trails the overlays your topo data if you have that installed.

Thanks for all the feeedback so far! We'll be going in a group, and we're all used to riding where there's no cell service at all, so it's nice to know we should be able to use a map, and should be reasonably easy to avoid getting lost. lol

Shoe.

Except your map is out of date as all East Beaches trails along the lake on the old rail bed are blocked off now so you can't get to Grand Marais for food or fuel. I'm not sure about any other things on your map, but if you could at least update that then no one will be led astray onto private property.
