That's pretty impressive to split in one day. That's a wicked fast cycle rate on that thing. My 5 ton electric splitter has a published 12 second cycle rate but realistically my GF and I are only splitting 2 or 3 logs a minute at best by the time you pick up a log, position it and split it. One chord a day is about maximum my splitter can put through in a day.
Yeah, it's a lot of wood...both myself and my parents heat solely with wood, so it's for 2 houses; we each use between 7-9 cord per year, weather depending.

The reason the split-fire is so fast, is that the knife is mounted in the middle with stoppers on each end; you split both ways. There is never a need to wait until the ram returns before starting the next split.

The machine will work faster than we can with 3 people...and we're only using the single knife- they have an available x-knife that would split into 4 right off the bat, but we only split pieces larger than 10" diameter more than once, so it won't help us much as it would just be creating kindling on anything smaller in my eyes...

I split 12 cords this year with a 4 ton princess auto splitter with the "Do not adjust" screw adjusted about 1.5 turns Safety Squints on. Rigged a foot pedal on mine so you can safely put your hands on the log to hold it while it crushes them... Joking aside foot pedal is the win! Make sure you get one with a toe cover so it doesn't get pressed by magic.

They are slow but almost nothing stops it. 4-way wedge makes it faster if you set it up properly. (They sit low and make wierd small pieces, but a welder fixes that. I'm faster with an axe but my body doesn't ache as much with the splitter :)

Thanks sleeper I'd appreciate that. I had a guy look at it and said it can't be done, I'd love to invite him over for a beer and split some wood at the same time we were having it.

I welded a one inch nut to my 4 way wedge so it sits higher..works like a charm now..

1" is probably around perfect. At first I was stuffing cardboard in it to raise it a bit but eventally it squishes down. I welded a piece of scrap 1/2" plate. But ened up sandwitching cardboard again. 1" seems to be the perfect height. I'm also thinking about extending the wings about 1" for those really big rounds. I've split rounds 24" in diameter on mine... I also keep an assortement of blocks I use as pusher blocks when I'm spitting smaller 16-18" stuff makes it alot faster since you only need to move the wedge 2-3 inches to split.

I have a 4 ton electric and love it too. I use a large wood clamp on the motor button so it stays on and then it is a one hand operation.

x2 on the 4 way wedge, 1" too low, needs a spacer.

While the round button is clamped down, doesn't the motor run continuously? I can't remember on my 5 ton at the lake if the motor starts from just pushing the button or whether you have to flick the lever down as well to make it start. Thankfully my GF enjoys helping me split so she doesn't mind being the chief button and lever presser and also throws the next log on while I position it at the other end and pull the buggers apart when they split. Goes so much faster with two people.

I would like to try the 4 way split wedge but my cut logs range from toothpick size up to 12 inchers since I cut all sizes and also buck them right to the top of the tree. The jackpine I usually cut for firewood are great for that because most are naked 3/4 of the way up. Is that 4 way wedge a PA store option or home made?

I spent all day splitting firewood at the lake today the old fashioned way and barely made a dent in my woodshed. I'm exhausted and a couple cocktails and 2 muscle relaxants have taken care of my back. Ouch !!!

Looking forward to a log splitter for Xmas !!

5 ton electric log splitter from PA = one hour or less for splitting the wood you did there with an axe and you would have the rest of the day available for cocktail relaxants.
