I am looking to rent a satellite phone for next week. We had one reserved at one of the local cell phone places but somehow the dates got screwed up. I have phoned all the other rental places in Manitoba and none are available.

If you've exhausted your local options and are in desperate need, call prairie mobile communications in Kenora. I've rented them from there before.

I'm looking for information about a Sat Phone. What kind of cost to buy or rent? What the cost of operation is? What kind and where in Wpg area?

To buy one you are in the $2,000 and up level. That would be an Iridium basic entry type handheld. No bells and whistles to speak of.

Last time I renewed a monthly plan was about 90 cents per minute but you need to commit to min. 150 min. per month or you get billed for minutes not used anyways.

I rented the iridium PTT's from satelline phone store. They ship them to you and you ship them back. Worked well down in Baja. Ran into many people that said they had no coverage and that they wished they rented the iridiums but they tried to save a few bucks. The iridiums have push to talk which is like a standard radio. No cost to use it either and works up to 2000 miles.
