Motor Coach Industries Grader

Last month I bought this motor grader that I plan on donating to our ATV/snowmobile club for grading our Belair Forest ATV and snomo trails in the summer. It is a Motor Coach Industries of Winnipeg grader made in 1954. I had no idea MCI built graders since they were and still are famous for buses but during and after the war years, they branched out into manufacturing many other things including trailers and construction equipment like graders. This unit is built like a tank and is in very good condition and runs well. It has a unique International WD-9 engine which starts on gas and after a brief warmup, you pull a lever and it closes the decompression ports and kicks in the diesel injectors at which time it belches out a fee puffs of smoke and then starts running on diesel.

I want to add power steerimg to the old girl and this is easily done by addng a hydraulic torque generator steering unit to the steering shaft. Very easy to splice in and plum with in/out hydraulic lines. These steering units were very popular on many brands of old tractors like Farmall, John Deere and others. They are made by Behlen or Char Lynn. I would need the steering unit and the priority valve that goes with it. If anyone has an old IH or Farmall tractor with one of these on it and rusting away in the back 40 and is willing to part with this item, I would appreciate it. I attached a couple pics of my MCI grader and also two pics of the steering unit I need. I also need two rear tires 14x24 and two fronts 7.5x20.

What does the hydraulic cylinder on the front end do? Looks like it raises or lowers the front end, but that's just guessing.

That cylinder is for tilting the wheels over left or right which is done when you are grading with the blade at a 45 deg angle you can lean the wheels over to compensate for the tendency for the grader to be pulled over so steering is much easier.

Thatís a pretty cool old grader but you could probably do better with a tractor with a blade or box scraper. I did run a grader for 15 years. If you be hooking roots etc it will be next to impossible to do anything with it. Be pretty rough on the operator.

I've used a blade on the back of a tractor and found it a total pain in the arse. It's too narrow and you would need too many passes on our wide trails. Not that many roots on them either. A box scraper would be better than a narrow tractor blade but I'm not fond of spending hours on end doing 50km of trail with my head wrenched backwards over my shoulder watching what's going on back there. We've hired graders several times over the years and they work well. Our trails are very sandy and it's all about moving a lot of sand across the trail that accumulates on the sides. With an angled blade you can move that side material back to the center on the trail to fill the mogels and deep swails. You can't do center crowning with a box scraper or move material right to left either but good for filling pot holes on a driveway.

Ya in sand I can see it working fine. Hope you find the power steering. Iíll keep a lookout. If you found an old combine with orbital steering that would work too possibly.

Yes an old orbital unit would also work well. Thanks for keeping an eye open for a torque generator steering unit.....much appreciated. There must be many of those old tractors around in back farm yards with one of those on it.
