Sometimes it's the hassle of crossing, sometimes it's the companies sending you to East Elbow Idaho and not having a load back for a few unpaid days, sometimes it's because you can't cross the border. I liked running south. Better roads, better food and more destinations. Kept a set of golf clubs under the bunk for those unexpected vacations. Better than running down the #1 over and over and over again. That chit will make you slit your wrists.

With the dollar the way it is right now, running south can get pretty expensive if you get stuck with no loads. Got stuck in Salt Lake City one time for 5 days, yes 5 days. Finally got a load up to Calgary for another 2 day visit.
Only lasted a yr on the highway, took a class 3 driving job here in Winnipeg. Yeah the money ain't as good but I have work everyday that pays and I am home everyday with weekends off.
Even with my year of experience, including winter and mountain driving, it was very difficult to find another class 1 driving job. Almost everybody wants two years experience unless you know a guy.
There is no shortage of drivers out there, there's hundreds if not thousands of bad class 1 drivers trying to get behind any wheel they can.

I've been crossing the border for years and has never taken more than 30 seconds at the booth. Be honest with simple answers and all good. In the last 4 years running south I spent a total of 4 days waiting for a reload. A good dispatch is what you need. Owning your own truck is ideal. I bought mine before the dollar took a nose dive and everything's been good. Just remember ALL trucks running south will need electric log books by the end of 2017

I'm not sure what highway rate would be. I know I paid my first driver almost double that a mile plus an hry rate for loading/unloading. But I care wether or not he can make a living. If there's anyway you can afford your own truck and maintain it will be a much better option.

.25 a mile would probably be for team drivers. Doesn't matter who's driving or sleeping, both would still be making .25 a mile. Truck would run 24 hrs a day till both drivers max out their hours.

Go team to start. You'll learn the tricks of the trade a lot quicker. Like how to deal with and prevent frozen brakes, best loading and weight distribution, how not to fall asleep driving across Saskatchewan, BS shippers and receivers play, how not to run out of hours, etc.. All your schooling won't mean sh!t when you find yourself suddenly in a snow squall on the 400 and people are spinning into the ditch all around you. Or how different wildlife move when approached. Dispatchers will also keep a team moving more than a rookie by himself. A single driver can sleep in the bunk for days. A team needs a hotel after so many hours waiting.
