Should i drill holes in my front tatous?
Last year we had a lot of up and down weather and being my atv is only in a tarp shed there were a few days the entire front tracks were full of frozen ice and caused some nice snapping noises leaving the lane way.
I know the first gens had holes drilled in them im just not to sure if i want to do this and risk ruining them. I have them all tore down to do all the bearings, double nut on the tigheners, and plasti dip the frames to match my quad so this wouldnt be to hard to add to the list just want to see what you guys think

To allow water to drain out of the front tracks....the flex front tracks act like a pool and keep melted snow in and refreezes

I have the same damn issue with my Trex 3.0s on my BF. I think I'll park it on an incline in the garage like maybe a 2x4 or something on one side to let the water drain before it freezes...

I understand about the Tatous being like a boat holding water snow and ice. If you park with slush in your tracks and it freezes over night or even in a hour or so you have problems. So the holes are for drains to let the water out. I have mentioend that to Tatou, along with wheels being pressed on instead of being bolted for ease of changing them, but have seen nothing for changes. you would have to drill a lot of holes to get enough on the bottom to drain then without having ice , snow , sticks or gravel blocking them

Savage, We considered doing to same to ours because at the end of each day, ours filled with water from the melted snow. But instead of drilling, you may wish to use a sharp piece of steel, like large nail. Then heat it with a torch and melt your holes through. I’d have done this down the center, every foot or so. On a unrelated issue when I was chatting with a mechanical engineer at Polaris, he suggest this was the proper way to put holes in fiber reinforced belting like our tracks are. In the end we found the water pond wasn’t an issue in our overly warm shop plus its lower than the bearings are. When we head out the door this water is flung out in seconds so we dropped the whole hole idea.
Hope that helps…… |
