A couple weeks ago 15 or 16 trucks were busted in the city for light bars...one was my friend..was a big ticket for illegal equipment.
Now he's called in for an inspection.

Was a good discussion on cheap vs good though lol lots of info.

yeah, 90% of people running them don't have em covered. that's the issue, and most buy the chinese bars, which most don't come with covers lmao.

Covered they are 100% legal as per HTA and MPI standards. I ran covered HID spot lights a while back and had no issue with multiple inspections. Also only happens in the city, thanks to the lovely VIU unit that MPI funds.

Hats off to the mpi viu, does anyone really need a 53in double row light bar on their pavement queen 4x4 used for driving around the city.

They aren't legal on gravel roads either.

Can't stand the tools that cruise around with a light bar on the roof of their truck. It's disgusting. Same over played tards with camo bug deflectors and fender flares lol the "better" lights aren't giving you way more length and way more light. Have you measured how far away the light reaches on the same truck? Or just looked brighter? Most of them use the same diffusers. There's no need for a light bar on a halfton. Now if the bar was mounted low to get under fog or snowy conditions and used when no other traffic is approaching then it has a purpose.

Thanks for the advice guys! I definitely didn't know anything about the IP rating before, so that's pretty cool to learn! I didn't want to necesarily buy the cheapest one I could find, but I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg either. Ordered one off ebay tonight, 20" cree led. I don't have much to compare it too, ie, more expensive bars, so as long as it does what it's supposed to i'm sure I'll be happy with it.

Technically, no they aren't but no traffic, so no harm.

do you really need it on a halfton? Depends how you use it.... If i had a halfton and used it the way I use my 1/4 ton yes I would have a use for a light bar.

And yes, the "better" Lights DO give more distance. It lit up things you couldnt even begin to see with the cheapies. The reflectors, and LED drivers are a lot different between the two. It's like when I had cheap round spot lights with HID bulbs, vs my brand name VisionX HID spot lights. Worlds different. It was insane.

1600? maybe if you overpay lol. 1200 CAD after tax and exchange. And that's for the best of the best they have. They have lesser models that are still better than Chinese lights.

Like i said earlier, im not saying don't buy the chinese lights because their useless. I'm just saying I would rather pay a bit more for something that will perform better.

I'm surprised you guys aren't buying those cheap chinese quads and just replacing them every year..... you'd save a lot of money. Yeesh. People drop $25K+ on a brand new sxs then another $5K on lifts, tires, etc. But yet scoff at paying more than $100 for a light bar. It's comical.

It's 1100 American for a bottom end one..1430 canadian with Exchange plus tax and duty..I'm pretty sure the guys who spend 5 g's on a lift put the real things on as cash is no object to them..that's not us..most have a 4 to 5000 buck quad who just want a little more light at night so let it rest..no one's buying a expensive light bar on here...you know what I find comical is the guys with the piddly ass 1/4 tonne trucks and rust buckets with rims and tires and light bars that are worth more then the whole truck..lol..they should save money and buy a real truck

Guess what, My piddly 1/4 ton does a far better job at what I need it to do than any full size would. It's called buying the right tool for the job. Go ahead and call it a "fake" truck all you want, but it does what I need it to. Goes places a full size wont, cost me less to buy, and is cheaper to run. It can haul and tow just as much as a fullsize as well. Deal with it.

And i'm not sure what kind of drugs your on, but the low end 30" BD bar is $799.99 USD. convert that to canadian and its $1040. Done deal.

Good for you..a cheap light bar is the right tool for the job..it gets it done..deal with it..you made a perfect example by explaining why you have a 1/4 tonne instead of full size.. c yaa I'm done

which is why I said previously that for most people on here, the cheap ones are more than enough. Maybe you need to go back, and read.

Lol no I know your a liar. There isn't one ranger that is cheaper to run, costs less to buy and goes places a 1/2 ton won't. They are expensive trucks (if that's what you call em) hard on fuel and a Ford

What's the use for a light on your 1/4 ton roof?

Also the hta does cover gravel roads so I believe the light is illegal no matter where you are.
