Damaged trails and how to help fix them

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/m...toba-1.4206255

After you read the article above, you will see what kind of damage I am talking about. I have seen some trails that look like that around the North Star trails, and I am sure there are many others all over the place.

My question is to anyone who has experience and knows, or has an idea, what would be the best solution to repair those areas? I'd like to try and fix some of the spots I have seen but I don't know how best to proceed.

Would filling it with sand or rocks help? How about laying trees/logs over it to fill it in? I'm also thinking of what would keep it passable to ORVs (as well as foot or other light traffic that may use the same trails), but also what would do the least damage to surrounding areas as well (i.e. Not cut down all the trees right on the side of the trail beside the damage to use as the logs, but bring in the trees/logs or sand/rocks from somewhere else). Short of building a bridge to span the damaged areas, or buying a front end loader to "rearrange" the terrain, what's the best solution?

Finally, would adding sand or rocks (or other materials) hurt the damaged area in any way as they may not be natural to the immediate area, and is it legal to do these kind of repairs on crown land? Just trying to cover all the bases here.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and input.

Thanks

You can't fix every wallowed out hole on a trail there is only so much money and volunteer hours for that. And I wouldn't read to much in to the CBC they cater to every whiner, tree hugger, leaf licker, hippy/ster, minority group that there is in the country.
But if you do have the money to fix the swamp holes you can do what the Eastman and Woodridge Sandhogs have done and lay out geotextile which is a type of soil reinforcement and place decent fill over top like gravel, bridging in one way but can be expensive and labour intensive something the Quad Squad in SouthWestern Alberta has done for years in the Crowsnest Pass as it is illegal to cross any water bodies in Alberta without. Sometimes changing the course of the trail can be done over firmer ground and letting the swamp grow back to what it once was.
Going and attacking everybody here is certainly not the way to do it especially with it being summer and people being on holidays. If your going to do that you might as well move to the Lower Mainland with the rest of the useless hippies in this beleaguered country or move to Quebec.

Trail Resteration

As you have seen for your self sustainability is an issue with the current ATV trail system in MB. Most of these trails can not sustain the amount of ATV traffic on the current trail systems without regular maintenance or major re construction to the current trail system. Some of these trails may have to be re-routed to establish a sustainable network of trails. Most of these trails were built or opened by just pushing a trail threw the path of least resistance, not necessarily the best rout. The biggest enemy of a sustainable trail system is standing water on a trail with a soft base. You have to establish a hard bottom or some other form of foundation for the trail to pass threw or over.

Unfortunately you are unable to repair these trail systems legally on Crown land without a work permit from Sustainable Development (Conservation), and you will also need a Land Use Agreement from SD.

The best thing you could do is join your local club or contact ATV MB, start a local club in your area. ATV MB has lot of connections to National and International organizations dedicated to trail development.

ATV Association of Manitoba

The Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV),

National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council

These hippies wouldn't even be able to walk the trails if it wasn't for the atv's, it is the atv'ers keeping them open at all

Have a look at this story: https://www.google.ca/amp/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.4207898
