DO YOU want cell service in Woodridge area???

People in the town of Woodridge are pushing forward and trying to get MTS to provide cell service in the Woodridge area. We all could help by sending a quick email to Vic Toew's office. SEnd you emails to
Email Subject: Communication within Woodridge and surrounding area
Email address: toewsv1b@parl.gc.ca
I am sure we would all like to be able to use a phone in the bush for any breakdowns on a Quad or especially on a sled in the dead of winter. We need to spread the word as Vic is meeting with MTS on Oct.23. Our voices will make a difference. It is funny how MTS boasts about having the greatest coverage and yet 75 minutes from the city there is no service. A sample letter is attached but feel free to create your own. Don't put this off please.
Thank You

Is the whole "Call-for-Application" specifically for Woodridge or are all rural communities eligible?

I believe it is for the whole area. I was asked by a resident of Woodridge. The tower is there but it needs the equipment put on it. Vic Toews has a meeting scheduled already with MTS and this is for fuel to see the importance. I will switch my provider when they have better coverage in this area also. This should help expidite the process hopefully.

I hope MTS gets a tower out there, so needed.

Best part is , if a MTS tower goes up, this also means Telus is up and running as well.

Email sent !!!! I even added in a little story of my experieance out at the Balmore pits and how we were able to call for help using our cell phones.

Thanks for the heads up Chef

A little birdy told me that MTS is working with ROGERS to switch over their phones to a GSM signal instead of CDMA (or whatever they use) to make them a WORLD FRIENDLY PHONE. Either way, wherever MTS has service now or in the future ROGERS will probably have the same coverage.

Not sure where that is going to leave TELUS their DP.

Cool the reply....

So here is the email I received from Vic's office today regaurding cell phone service...

October 22, 2009
Ditch Pickle

Dear Ditch Pickle,

Thank you for taking the time to contact the office of Vic Toews, MP for Provencher in regards to cell and/or broadband coverage.

We agree that there are many gaps in cell phone and broadband coverage areas in all of Manitoba.

Over the years we have contacted MTS many times to let them know that cell phone service in south-eastern Manitoba is severely lacking and we will continue to do so, on behalf of the constituents of Provencher.

In regards to broadband, the federal government has recently introduced the Rural Broadband Program to make broadband service available to as many unserved and underserved households as possible. Broadband is defined as a minimum 1.5Mbps.

Industry Canada undertook an extensive mapping exercise in order to understand the extent to which Canadians remain unserved or underserved. Based on the mapping data, Geographic Service Areas (GSAs) were defined and on September 1, 2009, a competitive call for applications was launched to fund projects in the GSAs. The Program will fund up to 50% of eligible project costs.

Eligible recipients will be the private sector or consortiums of companies, not-for-profit organizations, and provincial/territorial entities that build and operate broadband infrastructure. For more information on the program, please see the Industry Canada website at:

http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/719.nsf/eng/home

It would also be prudent for you to make MTS aware of your concerns regarding cell phone and/or broadband coverage. Please see the following web link for their online fillable form for comments and concerns:

https://www.mts.ca/contactus/

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact the office of Vic Toews, MP for Provencher.

Yours truly,
Marleen J. Hiebert
Office of Vic Toews, MP
Provencher Riding
Tel. 204-326-9889
Fax 204-346-9874

Not much of an answer per say, but explains a bit better as too what has/needs to happen... Now Im off to email MTS and see if I even get a reply.
