Painting rims

Can a guy just use a automotive style base clear for alum rims? I got a plan in mind but need to paint my rims. I know powder coating is the best but would it not work just to paint them and a pile of clear over top?

Bring them down to me at Carlson Sandblasting we will blast them first to clean them up.
Then your clear will have a good bond. It will change them more to a silver metallic look when you clear over aluminum.

I actually want to paint the face of my machined 212's and leave the rest black. And that is why I am wondering if automotive paint in a base clear would work.
