trying to determine year of Johnson 9.9 OB

I have a Johnson OB that needs a carb float (its the old kind made of some sort of coated cork or similar) and a carb kit...however it seems bearly impossible to determine the year/model of this thing so I can order a kit.

It has a had a rough life and is cosmetically...well ... challenged... as a consequence the model plate on the left side of the transom mount is MIA... the only number I can locate is ona freeze plug on the top of the engine..

I've called BRP and their "help" center said they have no idea what year/model I have based on that number.

The number is C8114933

There is a capitol M in a Square (parralellagram) box over the number.

Anyone have an idea how to determine the year and exact model of this motor so I can get a carb kit?

Thanks

Avo

AVO could probably help you as they have a ton of manuals there. They probably also have the parts, but they're not cheap.

I"ve got the carb off and apart ..the only number is on the bottom of the carb bowl... will a carb kit be the same from 1975ish through 1988? I don't think so...

Why not just take carb to dealer ask for kit for that carb? They’ve probably seen 100’s.

That looks like an early 70's to me. Do you have a picture of the cowl? that would help but the starting system looks like a 74 that I had. some of the slightly later ones had a different recoil from I remember. This looks like the "sparkplug" model
I may even have a spare carb for one

The bottom end and motor are white, not green. That means 1977 and up. Metal float bowl is pre 1980, plastic float bowl is 1980 up.

Probably better off buying a new all-plastic carb if you are using crap gas. Ethanol eats the varnished cork floats.

can you post a pic of the carb float?

if not google "10RL78M carb" and let me know if its close or whats different.

or link/float assembly at http://www.cafr.ebay.ca/itm/OEM-OMC-...-/361463125563

Most very common for Johnson of that era carried up to wr hp

The white color is definitely associated with 80's models, post a picture of the cowl if you can. That will narrow it down quickly
The recoil just looks like an older system to me

I popped into AVO today and I "think" I have it narrowed down to the 1974-1987 range..seems the same carb was in them all during that period....

I'll bring my carb in there next week to confirm but the kit is...I think..
