Heat kills stators. The new SDI system likely needed more juice which equals more heat. I would leave those vents open just in case. I would also keep an eye on the starter rope. By that photo it seems like quite a change of direction that will wear that bushing and shortly after damage the rope. Pure speculation of course.

with electric start the rope should not see much use

Covering it with metal screening should help keep out junk and still allow ventilation.

Hopefully blowing out of those openings, not drawing in.

there is no fan under the recoil cover or attached to the stator rotor

what you're seeing through the slots that looks like a fan is just the pulley the recoil rope winds on....it only turns when the rope is pulled.

Ok kinda looked like fan blades. I would imagine a screen may help keep crap out then.

RWS -- that's a weird system ... It has to be cooling or allowing cooling to happen ... Yes I would be worried that it
would plug when driving through the bulrushes ... Even ice forming in the area when its cold ... Hope it does not cause you troubles

FeelTheThunder will become famous soon enough
You really shouldn't be driving through bull rushes, very hard on much more expensive things like the clutches and intakes. Weeds are different.

Looks like a good idea to me, should let some heat out of the stator area. The flywheel pulley should provide some fan action to help cool things. Looks like you would need a new flywheel puller if the time comes, I don't think Cat has used a 4 bolt before. My 3 bolt puller won't work.

Ok being a Yamaha junkie my question would be why do you need a rope?
Is it just not that reliable?
