Tracks for grooming ski trails?

Tracks on a quad work way better than a sled when pulling a ski groomer. You can stop half way up a hill and take off again without spinnig, you can also turn sharper and travel at a very slow speed to cut down the ruts or hard drifts.

Cross country ski club in Kenora uses a quad with tracks for maintaining their trails, works much better than the Alpine they had used previously.

thats what ive been trying to say,but he insists the sled(yammie vk540 and a alpine double track)are better,we had been talking about how the vk is a bear to control and push's in every corner, thats when i mentioned that a quad in 4wd would probably do better since its pushing and pulling,he is worried the tracks on the bike would dig up the trails and leave ruts when setting the ski tracks..thnx guys for the posts

the tracks will make sum marks but arent you going to be dragging a groomer behind it anyway? Sleds would make more marks i would think because they would be spinning out more often and so on. well depending on how heavy the groomer is and what angle the hills are(if your trails go up hill, Im not sure). the quad would be the better choice i think, plus in the summer you could use the atv to clean up the trails and maintaine them in the summer time aswell.

This A 700 side x side grooming at spruce woods. It works great! Lots of hills to go up.

there are a couple hills but nothing major,i know the bike can pull a drag, the main concern is with laying the ski tracks..would the bike tracks mess up the ski tracks?i wouldnt think so..but like HRL stated kenora had better luck with a bike over the alpine, that tells me it works

There are a lot of folks using ATVs / UTVs / side by sides to groom XC trails these days ( and snowmobile trails where they can).

There is a pretty good group of XC groomers who post on Koz's grooming site:

http://s8.zetaboards.com/snowgroomingtalk/forum/7354/

I've sold an Alpine II, and am selling an Alpine I as well, (I had three last winter, hope to only have one this coming winter!) and have picked up a Yamaha Grizzly 700 to groom with this coming winter (I tested one out last winter, and have 3 local centers that have gone over to using ATVs to groom with). I'll likely be picking up Tatou 4s tracks based on how well they've worked locally (including the '09-10 track year some folks have had problems with).

If my trails were wider (and my drags were too) I'd probably have picked up a minitruck with UTV tracks on it instead - I think that will be the next big thing for a lot of small centers / home groomers.
