Hi Can Am,

I am interested in this for my Son. What year is the welder, whats the condition of it like? Is it ready to be used, or does it need repair? This welder is going to be used on the frame of his 1928 Ford Model A and the body as well.

Are there pros and cons to going gasless? 120V at what Amperage? Do I need a dedicate 120V plug?

When it comes to welding, I am out of my element. What type of helmet is it? Pictures?

For body panels, you are better off with a gas mig welder that has adjustments for wire speed and voltage. Not saying the Lincoln Handy Core 100 is a bad welder, its actually listed at a REALLY GOOD PRICE and is a really good hobby welder!!! It's just that its a flux core with two fixed voltage setting. Unless really proficient using it on light gauge metal, it makes a mess and will require a lot of cleaning/grinding and would probably burn through a lot of spots and/or will definitely warp the metal. Lets just say lots of BONDO!!! It may work okay on the frame but unless you are diligent with cleanup between welds, you may have contaminated welds which will lead to cracking/fatigue, not good on a frame. A gas mig that has adjustable voltage will leave clean welds and you can control the amount of heat especially on body panels. Less contamination, clean-up, holes and warpage.

And just as importantly, I don't know that a welder of that size will give you the penetration that you would want when welding a frame.

I don't mean to hijack, but wanted to put that info out there, especially considering that some frame welding is planned.

The welder is about 5 years old and is in good working condition. I have not used it that much did not have much needing welding. The welder came with a 5 pound spool of wire and i used that and now on the second spool. As for welding a frame with it i do not think it can handle that the manual says 3/16" max allthough i have used it to weld small pieces of 1/4" steel together but i had to heat up the metal with a torch first. As for welding body panels with it it works good for that you just have to pay attention to what you are doing so you do not have allot of grinding to do later. pros and cons gas mig welders do make a nicer weld but tank rentals are expensive. With fluxed core you have to chip off the flux off the weld when done. I think it is 80 amp and i have used it on the same 15 amp breaker with a couple of floresent lights. I live in Gimli i hope that answers some of your questions I tryed to get a picture attached and i could not get it to attach f****n computers.
