Have you checked the furnace filter? Can you inspect the coil above your furnace as it needs to as clean as the condensor (outdoor unit)? The Evaporator coil above the furnace can be cleaned with a fine wire brush and then should be cleaned with evap cleaner which is a expanding cleaner that washes out the louvers. Is there lots of water coming out of the drain?

temp coming out of the vent should be close to 55-60F.
What is the temp coming out of the vent closest to your AC?

Maybe just hot temp too much for the old girl to handle and not the charge? If temp around 60c it could rule out problems and simply just not enough capacity.

All you have to do is start the engine and look at the ac clutch the pulley allways spins with the belt but the clutch hub wont turn unless ac switch is on and ac charge is good. Check the fins on the condenser if your outta town lots they can plug with fluff from bull rushes. Too many bent fins will slow down air flow and it won't cool effectively. Also if equipped with electric fans they should be on full wile the ac is on.

The durance filter is wet because the evap coil was probably a solid block of ice which is either an air flow problem or you are low on refer. If you are running the unit while it is freezing up then you will notice decreased air flow from your ducts and the house will not cool down, you need to let the unit thaw out before you or a service tech have a look at it so they can see the coil

X2 The evap will ice up if its low on gas, or poor air flow. check your filter, your blower wheel could be dirty, if its a old furnace, check the belt and tension on the blower too. Good luck trying to get a guy out.

I have someone coming out today to test the pressure and take a look at the evap. There is two places where the foam has split close to the outdoor unit and has iced up as thick as the foam, was told this is because it`s low on the juice will see when buddy shows up!!!
