Check your air box for abnormal amount of oil in there, "IE" pooling in the bottom of the air box with an oil soaked air filter. The crank case ventilation system may be at fault.

Or it could be a head gasket, as you did say there was a awful smell when accelerating hard with the smoke. It will usually smell sweet or an odd smell, usually a white white smoke. Not as blue as oil would be.

But I bet it will be a crank case ventilation problem, the valve is located on the rear of the valve cover with a black cap on it with a hose going to the air cleaner can.

Have a compression test done. You may have engine blow-by. I had this similar problem with my 850XP at 500 miles and received a new engine from Polaris.

Also, the oil in the airbox Rumley talks about is a widespread problem with 850Xp's from 09 -11. I had oil in my airbox after every ride for 2 years even after I got the new motor until I had the 2012 breather kit installed (also under warranty). No oil in the airbox since.

Thanks for the replys. There could be a fair bit of oil in the air box as i never cleaned it in a lil while (keep forgetting). But I just asked a buddy what color was the smoke and he said it is very light grey in color. which makes it sound like the head gasket? The quad is at the lake and im going to get it today so i can check it out.

again thanks for the replys!

youd be puffing pretty white if it was burning up coolant, also would have overheating problems etc..

Its not overheating at all. if i was to clean out the air box, would i notice a difference right away? Also my oil looks golden. Wouldnt it be milky if it was a head gasket? Sure am hoping it not the head gasket lol

in most cases if the head gasket is far enough gone your oil will be milky, sometimes it wont get into the oil. but i would start by making sure you have a clean air filter and try some new plugs mabye as i know even on my 09 they like to foul plugs because they run so rich.
