Atlas often top many lists. The Atlas 1235 is a great shoe. They make lots in the $300 - $500 range to choose from. 1235's can be bought for around $300. In MB crampons are a must for packed / slippery areas when you should be taking your shoes off but don't.

If they never shoed before and list topping becomes not so important then Costco often offers great starter sets for people to try out. If they never shoed before they are in for a big workout... and maybe a starter set is better suited. $70 / $140 / $180 is Costco's price points for Chinese brands.

Match to capability, weight, fitness level.

Kijiji often filled with LOTS as once people find out how much work it is they give up quick.

Most any type will work fine... of course they make sepcialty boots as well.

A bulky snowmo boot works but feet will normally overheat after a while. Will also blow more energy using big / heavy boots

An athletic winter hiking style boot work best.

Specialy boots are a couple hundred bills for say a North Face snoshoe boot.

High quality / hard to go wrong with that set.

Look at the 1025's or 1035's. A little cheaper and maybe more suitable for the type of snow and location I think is where you are from

Check out the snowshoe man in Newfieland. I saw him on Land And Sea a few years ago, Tracked down a number and ordered a pair for son 1. Very simple, very tough, and at the time I think they cost me something like 110 or 120 postage included. They have probably gone up since then but still worth checking out IMHO.
