Is My Fridge Hooped?

I have a 4.3 cu.ft Simplicity (Danby) fridge in the basement that rarely gets used in the summer. Checked it out the other day to see if there was a beer in it and it’s warm inside (no beer either). The compressor is not cutting in like it used to and all I can hear is a click, tag with the date 2001.04.30 on it. I just set out on the deck to take to the dump but am wondering if there may be something simple to try. Pretty sure it’s not worth fixing; they are currently on Sale at Canadian Tire for $159.99 + taxes.

I think you are not wrong.

Had same problem on a similiar fridge and was advised likely it was the motherboard needing to be replaced. Part $200 / labour $100. Yours could be different.

I choose to replace with a new fridge as the repair person also said 10 years out of a fridge is doing well enough and not worth repairing unless high end / specialty fridge.

Any of these smaller cubic foot fridges(12 cu.ft and smaller) are being made in China, parts are generally not available and even if it was on warranty it would be a simple replacement as opposed to fixing.

You've done well if you've got over 10 yrs out of it. Take er to the dump.

Thanks prowler but yes it has to be at least 15 years or older and a minimum of 10 cubic feet. I got rid of a big one last winter out of the basement.

They say that on the website but when the guys came to get it I offered to plug it in to prove it worked and they didn't give a rat's ass. I never did plug it in. Also had the cheque in the mail about 2 weeks later.

Here's a simple trick to try...

unplug it, and lay it down on its back for a couple days. Sometimes the coils develop an airlock and it'll behave like that. Stand it back up and plug it in. If it works you're gold, if not, you lost nothing

Jimbob is on a distinguished road
You can try this:
On the side of the compressor, there should be a relay under a small cover. Remove the relay, noting the connections (use a cellphone camera to take a pic before removal).
Take it to Waddell's or Reliable and match it up. Should be a $15-$25 part.
Can't guarantee that is the problem, but it is worth a shot.
