We buy 33gallon steel drums from Great Western Container on Dawson rd at Dugald hwy. They have the removable top and are clean. Not sure food grade clean but give them a call.

Pharic.270 is on a distinguished road
Are you trying to build something like this?

Another guy and myself built that for a Sheet Metal instructor at RRC. No steel drum needed if you can get the metal rolled and know how weld :)

As cool as that is I am looking at using the drum up right cut a round hole in the side at the bottom and us a pipe for the wood fire then a pipe to hang meet on the top. We use a old furnace jacket and a piece of culvert to smoke sausage at home. I want to make a downsized version to smoke tenderloins. I work in a weld shop so welding is not an issue.

Or maybe even a 3' piece of 24 or 30" culvert?

Give some thought to an old used hot water tank. I have seen some made that way and they seem to be working just fine.

i was too going to turn the steel drums into a smoker... i was looking for everything, at the time a 45 gallon steel drum was best... i was looking for old 200 gallon propane tanks, and hotwater tanks, fridges... everything....

but found something better... and well.... when shes done, i will post how it turns out :)

i am trying to decide, if i do a dual heat source... by propane/fire or fire/electric... i want to be able to move it around, hence fire... plus... with the fire... you can burn different woods, and get flavor as well as with smoke....

Well for me I just want a simple set up, just for doing pork tenderloin and maybe ribs once in awhile. I think the 45 gal drum would be a perfect size but I would want one with a removable lid. And I will be using only wood for mine.
